CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Area High School girls track team met one of their pre-season goals by claiming their first Mountain League title after easily beating Central 114-27 at the Bison Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The win raised their record to 7-0 in the league and 7-1 overall.
The boys team team also raised their record to 7-1 overall after their thrashing of Central 145.5 to 4.5. The boys team is 6-1 in league action.
Lady Bison head coach John Jacob summed up the girls season thus far with, “This was a great win to claim our first Mountain League Championship. It was one of the first goals that we set at the beginning of the year. Each of the girls has contributed in one way or another and they each deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments.”
About this meet, coach Jacob added, “On the girls side it was a dominant effort. Rachel Glenny had an impressive night winning four events. Her meet started when she won the shortest distance on the track (100 meter hurdles) and ended when she won the longest distance event on the track (3200 meter run). She is an exceptional athlete that can fit anywhere on the track, and makes it hard for many teams to match up against us during the season. Claire Mikesell and Courtney Smith made their debut performance in the 1600m and 800m respectively. Each girl ran away with their event and did so by running some of the top times we have seen this year. Sarah Lash also won two throwing events and that continues to improve as our team prepares for our two upcoming championship meets.”
The boys had an exceptional meet, which was confirmed by Coach Jacob, “The boys had an excellent night on the track and in the field. All of our top runners, throwers and jumpers were close to or exceeded their season best performance. Tyler Stratton pulled out back to back wins in the 110 hurdles and the 100m and did so with two very impressive times. With his performance, Tyler has put himself in position to try and win two events at the District 9 Championship Meet in three weeks. Dylan Graham was able to come away with a time in the 300 hurdles comparable to his district championship time of last year. The boys’ throwing also put up some impressive performances with Wyatt Flannigan winning the discus and javelin. Our distance runners are also starting to peak late in the season, which will make a huge impact at the next two championship meets. Alec Freeman, Jon Sponsler and Jack Soult have been steadily improving thoughout the year.”
The team will have a week off and will next travel to St. Marys on April 30 to take on the Flying Dutch.
