DUBOIS – It was a day geared more for a Friday night football game than a Saturday afternoon softball game, but Curwensville Area High School and DuBois Central Catholic were determined to make up a postponed game from earlier this season. The Lady Tide handled the chill better on the day as they downed the Cardinals 13-0 in five innings.
“I was a little worried that the weather would level the playing field a bit,” said Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey. “We battled the forces well for the game and overcame that obstacle.”
The chill in the air was made worse by the constant wind on the Lady Cardinals’ home field, and getting a hit without feeling the sting of the contact was not easy. Neither team looked sharp as the game opened.
The Lady Tide found their stride in the second inning. Tiffany Carter opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and after stealing second scored on Abby Johnson’s single. Alaina Stiles moved Johnson to second on a sacrifice bunt and Nikki Harker singled to left for a 2-0 start.
In the third inning Cheyenne Pentz reached second on a pair of errors, rolled into third via a passed ball and trotted home when Carter collected her second homer in two games. A third run scored in similar fashion in the second – Johnson walked; Stiles sacrificed her to second and Harker singled to bring her home for a 5-0 count.
“Everyone was contributing to the cause in one way or another,” Leigey mentioned. “We got a lot of positives on a bad weather day. That’s some momentum we can use down the road.”
In the fifth inning, Curwensville closed the game by sending 12 batters to the plate to score eight to put the 10-run rule into effect. Carter opened the frame with a double to left. After the first out, two free passes loaded the bases, and Tierra Shope helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Carter. Curwensville went on to score seven more runs with two outs. Hits were collected by Melanie Milliron, Sarah Wriglesworth, Cheyenne Pentz and Johnson while DCC committed three miscues to aid the cause.
Carter paced the offense with her two solid hits while Taylor Goodman, Johnson, Harker and Milliron all collected two hits each. Johnson drove home three runs while Carter and Harker earned two RBI’s apiece.
Shope handled the circle well in the cold, as she struck out five and walked one to earn her seventh win of the season. The Cardinals collected just five hits and managed to get just one runner to third base in the game.
The Lady Tide will continue its road trip with a visit to Johnsonburg on Monday.
