Campus Corner: Lanbserry Continues Rise in Lycoming Pitching Stats

SOFTBALL

WILLIAMSPORT — Holly Lansberry (Curwensville) became Lycoming’s all-time leader in pitching starts and moved into second place for appearances and strikeouts as she split a pair of decisions last week.

The senior right-hander was the loser in the 6-1 opener against Commonwealth Conference co-leader Lebanon Valley at the Shangraw Athletic Complex Saturday but came back to get a win, 5-4 in eight innings, against Hood at Frederick, Md., Sunday.

The two starts were No. 61 and No. 62 for Lansberry, surpassing the record set by Mary Beth Schwindenhammer from 1994 through 1997.

She also passed Schwindenhammer on the all-time appearances list and is only two behind the Warrior record 74 established by Morgan Mantle from 2003 through 2006.

With 11 strikeouts against Lebanon Valley and six against Hood, Lansberry boosted her career total to 316, six more than Schwindenhammer registered.

Lansberry’s win was the only one Lycoming (11-15) had in twinbills with Selinsgrove, Lebanon Valley and Hood. The Warriors are 2-10 in the conference.

Lansberry, the right fielder when she’s not in the circle, rapped four hits, drew four walks and was hit by a pitch that kept her team-best on-base average at .409.

She also is first in walks (14), second in hits (21) and batting average (.288), tied for second in doubles (2) and stolen bases (3), and third in runs scored (13).

In the circle, Lansberry (5-5) is the team leader in appearances (14), wins, innings pitched (62), earned run average (2.82) and strikeouts (65). She also has the lone save.

Commonwealth Conference stats show Lansberry fourth in strikeouts and ninth in ERA.

CLARION – Three area players fared no better than the majority of their Clarion (1-27) teammates last week.

Sophomore infielder Brett Sutika (Grampian/Curwensville Area H.S.) started three of the Golden Eagles’ six games and had one hit and two walks in 10 plate appearances, while sophomore infielder Derek Danver (Clearfield) wore the collar in eight trips to the plate as a starter at second base, right field and designated hitter.

Junior pitcher Ben McGary (Curwensville) was roughed up by Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a 14-1 loss Sunday, giving up 10 hits and 10 runs, five earned, in three-plus innings.

Clarion dropped two non-conference games to Point Park and four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division games to IUP for a 12-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles, 1-15 in the PSAC-West, have a .206 batting average and 11.33 earned run average.

For the season, Danver is hitting .206 with two doubles and Clarion’s lone home run among his 11 hits. He has been hit a team-high four times.

Sutika has a .143 average with five hits, one a double.

McGary owns Clarion’s only win in seven decisions. The left-hander leads the team in complete games (3), innings pitched (34.1) and strikeouts (20) and has the second best ERA at 6.55.
