BELLEFONTE — One day after watching an early lead turn into defeat, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team saw a late lead disappear as Bellefonte erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win Friday’s Mountain League game 15-6.
What could have been a great opening week to the 2013 season ended at 1-2 for the Bison, who had gone in front 6-4 in the top of the sixth on Jon Janocko’s first career home run, a run-scoring groundout by Sawyer Rowles and RBI singles by Jonas Kochan and Curtis Collins.
However, the Red Raiders parlayed seven hits off three Bison relief pitchers with five walks and a hit batsman to notch their second one-sided victory.
Tanner Day’s three-run double was the big blow. Pinch-hitter Ryan McElroy, Jordan Fye and Ethan White drove in two runs apiece with hits in the outburst.
Thomas Summers, who escaped a bases-loaded situation with a pickoff in the fifth frame, took the loss. He was followed to the mound by Devin Jones and Cole Kephart.
Janocko was the starter, giving up five hits and four runs, only one of which was earned. He struck out four and walked five.
Pinch-hitter Erik Sellers’ bases-loaded walk and Kephart’s sacrifice fly produced the other Clearfield runs in the fifth, temporarily tying the count.
Bellefonte went back in front, 4-2, in the bottom of that inning before Summers replaced Janocko.
The Bison solved three Red Raider hurlers for nine safeties, but only Summers socked two.
Clearfield begins a four-game week with trips to Tyrone Monday and Punxsutawney Tuesday. The latter non-league game site was changed because the Bison Sports Complex field is not playable. Clearfield will host the Chucks on May 17.
