MILESBURG — Megan Dudish bested Heather Picard in a terrific Mountain League pitching duel decided by an unearned run as Bald Eagle Area spoiled the Clearfield Area High School softball team’s opener, 1-0, at the Milesburg Little League Complex Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles got that lone run in the first inning on Allie Simpson’s single following a Lady Bison miscue.
Dudish added a hit with two outs and was the last Lady Eagle to reach base, as Picard then turned in five perfect innings.
The senior right-hander logged two strikeouts.
“She pitched a gem,” first-year head coach Bob Lewis said. “It’s unfortunate she had to take a loss.”
As good as Picard was, Dudish emerged with the victory primarily because of 14 strikeouts that prevented the Lady Bison from cashing in any of their three hits and two walks.
Megan Vanderburgh had two hits for Clearfield, which travels to Bellefonte Friday.
“It was a rough way to start, but we played a good game against a good team,” Lewis said. “Picard pitched the way we expected her to pitch, and the defense played very, very well.
“I’m pretty happy with them. We definitely have something to build off of.”
