SHARON — District 9 crowned four champions, two of them repeaters, in the PIAA Northwest Region Class AA Tournament finals dominated once again by District 10 wrestlers Saturday night at Sharon High School.
Redbank Valley sophomore Willie Gruver defended his 113-pound title while Kane junior Evan Delong successfuly made the jump from 145 to 160 to join the ranks of standouts with multi region belts.
Smethport senior 132-pounder Karl Lightner and Brookville junior 138-pounder Brock Zacherl were able to climb to the top of the winner’s stand one year after falling short in gold medal matches.
Gruver avenged his previous week’s loss to Kane’s Cody Blankenship in the D-9 finals with a 4-2 decision, Delong edged D-10 champ Taylor Fox of Fort LeBoeuf 5-3, Lightner majored D-10 runner-up Adam Fish of Seneca 17-5 and Zacherl took down D-10 champ Michael Bonnor in overtime for a 10-8 victory.
D-9 had three other runners-up in Brookville’s Taylor Ortz at 106, Smethport’s Trent Neely at 120 and Coudersport’s previously-unbeaten Kyle Bova at 152.
Three D-9 teams had two wrestlers qualify for this week’s PIAA Class AA Championships at Hershey with wins in the consolation finals.
They were Brookville’s Dalton Zimmerman at 132 and Zach Vroman at 145, Redbank Valley’s Cole Shirey at 160 and Aaron Hook at 182 and Port Allegany’s Alex Gular at 170 and Nick Budd at 285.
Two-time PIAA silver medalist Austin Matthews of Reynolds led D-10’s powerful contigent by claiming his fourth region championship, besting Bova 18-6 in the finals for his 39th bonus-point win in his last 40 matches. Matthews beat Zacherl 5-3 in the 138 title match last year.
D-10 had two other repeat champs, Saegertown’s Tyler Vath up from 106 to 120 and Sharon’s Jarray Norris up from 120 to 126.
Also grabbing gold were Saegertown’s Devin Brown at 106 and Dylan Reynolds at 182, Reynolds’ Levi Stoyer at 145, Union City’s Tim Vargo at 170, Corry’s Ryan Morris at 195, Cochranton’s Cam Cyphert at 220 and Lakeview’s Sam Breese at 285.
Cypyer prevented Fort LeBoeuf’s Evan Daley from repeating by reversing the outcome of their D-10 finals bout.
Reynolds earned the team title for the 18th time with 118 points.
Four D-9 teams cracked the top 10, Brookville (94.5) placing third, Redbank Valley(72) fourth, Kane (45.5) seventh and Smethport (42.5) ninth.
