Lady Golden Eagles Dump Clearfield 59-39

HYDE –  Never trailing the entire contest, the Tyrone Area High School girls basketball team took down Clearfield Wednesday night on the Lady Bison home floor, 59-39.

With the win the Lady Golden Eagles swept the two game season series, having beaten the Bison earlier this year in Tyrone, 60-49.

Seven first quarter points by senior Nicole Gripp led the way for Tyrone, as it jumped out to a double digit margin after one frame, 19-7.

The Lady Bison never did get the Tyrone bulge under 10 points the rest of the evening.

Clearfield’s Breanna Peters was the lone shining star, as the senior scored 18 points and pulled down double digits in rebounds, 17 to be exact, for a double-double.

Tyrone built the lead to 31-12 at the intermission as it outscored Clearfield 12-5 in the second eight minutes.

The Lady Bison did play the Lady Golden Eagles even in the second 16 minutes, only being outscored 28-27, but the damage done in the first half was enough to doom Clearfield, who fell to 5-14 on the season.

Gripp was the game’s high scorer with 20 and Lady Golden Eagle teammate Jordyn Swogger added 11 as Tyrone won for the seventh straight time and improved to 15-5 overall.

Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo spoke following the game, saying, “We gave them a battle down there and I thought on our home court things would be different tonight. Obviously they were not, and we just got beat by a better team, plain and simple.”

Then Castagnolo added, “We have three games left. And we beat each of those teams (Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and Curwensville) so I am hoping for the same results.  The kids need to step up to end this season on a positive note.”

In the junior varsity game Tyrone also prevailed, defeating the Lady Bison 43-39. Mary Ishman had 16 and Emily Ryan tallied 13 in a losing effort for the Clearfield JV’s, now 6-10 on the year.

The Lady Bison are on the road Friday, traveling to Penns Valley, with junior varsity action beginning at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.

Clearfield won the first encounter against Penns Valley earlier this season, 49-39, on the Bison home floor.
