Lancaster Places Third, Stubbs Sets Golden Tide Pin Record at Fred Bell Tournament

GROVE CITY — Sophomore 126-pounder Jake Lancaster’s charge through the wrestlebacks to earn third place and senior heavyweight Brad Stubbs’ school-record seven-second pin were the brightest highlights for Curwensville in the 30th Annual Fred Bell Memorial Tournament at Grove City High School Friday and Saturday.

Pinned in just 39 seconds by Conneaut’s Kyle Lukowich in the preliminary round, Lancaster bounced back to reel off six wins, four via falls.

The Golden Tide matman avenged his loss by beating Lukowich 2-0 in the consolation semifinals and followed that up by decking Redbank Valley’s Mitch Blose at the 1:53 mark of the third-place match.

Earlier, Lancaster rolled through the consy rounds with falls against Trevor Fowler of Mercer in 2:10, Trevor Williams of Lakeview in 44 seconds and Riley Gunter of Clarion in 27 seconds after advancing via default over Brandon Mackie of St. Marys.

“I was really happy with Jake Lancaster’s performance,” Curwensville coach Duane Wriglesworth said. “We had talked about where he thought he could finish, and he said he wanted to finish at least third.

“So, I was really pleased with how he mentally prepared himself for that tournament. And to come back and beat the kid he lost to shows the determination he had.”

Stubbs etched his name in the Golden Tide record book when he pinned Conneaut’s Brian Lipps in the quarterfinals.

The previous record was a nine-second fall by Dave Riddle in 1970.

Stubbs, who was seeded No. 2, appeared on his way to the finals with a late 9-5 lead against Sharpsville’s Kaleb Robertson in the semis, but overaggressiveness in the neutral position cost him. Robertson, the No. 3 seed, countered a throw attempt for two-and-three.

Stubbs escaped to send the bout into overtime, only to have Robertson secure the takedown for a 12-10 sudden victory.

“Stubbs injured his shoulder when Robertson fell on him in the third period, and I think that injury held him back,” Wriglesworth said. “Robertson was a quality opponent, and he just made an aggressive mistake.”

Stubbs defaulted after one minute of his consolation semi bout with Ben Carillo of Redbank Valley and did not wrestle against Jonathan Hennegan of Mercer in the fifth-place match.

Curwensville had one other placewinner, Sam Bressler finishing fifth at 113 with a 6-1 decision over Kaleb Chase of Titusville after splitting four previous matches.

The Golden Tide sophomore got off to an impressive start, rolling up a 16-0 technical fall against Adam Dosch of Lakeview and then lateral dropping No. 3 seed Nathan Kline of Cochranton right to his back for a 1:26 fall.

“That definitely was a confidence-booster for him and put him in the semis,” Wriglesworth said.

Bressler lost his next two bouts, 6-2 to Stroudsburg’s Manny Flores and 7-1 to Northwestern’s Bruce Copeland before beating Chase.

Tyler Mays (4-2) at 120 and Trey McKenzie (3-2) at 145 also had winning records while Austin Pollick (2-2)

“It was good to see Mays have a good run through the consolation bracket,” Wriglesworth said. “He was one match away from placing.

“As a team, we definitely had a much better performance than last year.”

The Golden Tide collected 75 points to place 11th among the 27 teams.

Led by a trio of champions and four runners-up, General McLane amassed 258.5 points to claim the title, while Redbank Valley was a distant second with 222.5.

Four District 9 wrestlers won crowns, Redbank Valley’s Willis Gruver at 113 and Ty Haines at 145 and Coudersport’s Cody Bova at 138 and Kyle Bova at 152.

Other champions were Joe Wheeling of General McLane at 106, Jones Reaugh of Jamestown at 120, D.J. Feldman of Warren at 126, Shane Gentry of South Side at 132, Ossie Bowers of General McLane at 160, Austin Andrews of Cochranton at 170, Chris Laird of General McLane at 182, Dan Geer of Franklin at 195, Cam Cyphert of Cochranton at 220, Sam Breese of Lakeview at 285.

Outstanding Wrestler honors went to Gentry for five falls, all in the first or second periods.

Curwensville (6-10) will return to dual meet action Thursday at Moshannon Valley.

The Golden Tide was scheduled to host Philipsburg-Osceola Tuesday, but that match has been postponed because the Mounties are wrestling Bald Eagle Area in the District 6 Class AAA Team Duals.
