State Ranked Brookville Pins Golden Tide, 58-15

CURWENSVILLE – Ranked number seven in the state of Pennsylvania, the Brookville Area High School wrestling squad had an easy overall time with the Curwensville Golden Tide Thursday night, 58-15, on the Tide’s home mat.

Curwensville head coach Duane Wriglesworth knew coming in that it was going to be a tough match for his team, saying afterwards, “Brookville has a very outstanding team that deserves its state ranking.  But we told our kids before the match to give it all they have and make your match one everyone remembers.”

With Brookville, now 17-2, ahead 6-0 after the first bout, it was Austin Pollick at 182 for the Tide up against 18-4 Raider senior Taylor Cudworth.

The Tide senior gave it his all, giving up just a first period takedown and giving Cudworth all he could handle before losing 2-0.

Wriglesworth commented on the effort by Pollick, “I was truly impressed with Austin’s (Pollick) effort tonight.  He did a nice job against a quality wrestler.”

After a forfeit at 195 that saw the Tide trailing 15-0, it was the heavyweights for Curwensville that gave the home town fans some excitement and a slight ray of hope.  And in quick order.

Ricky Magnuson, at 220 pounds, took just 21 seconds to show Raider Chris Burchard the lights of Patton Hall and put the Golden Tide on the board.

Curwensville heavyweight Brad Stubbs also wasted little time in pinning Tom Smouse in 33 seconds that had the Tide only down 15-12 with a bunch of wrestling remaining.

Unfortunately, the strong Brookville line-up came up huge, winning the next eight bouts and racking up 43 team points to bolt out in front 58-12.

Dakota Royer gave the Tide fans the last smile of the night as he defeated Austin Clinger 3-1 in the final bout at 160.

Royer made a second period three point near fall stand up against the Brookville senior to pick up his fourth win of the year.

Wriglesworth closed with, “One nice surprise tonight was our two heavyweights getting pins and the only real disappointment is the fact that we still have some of our guys out sick and hope to get them back soon.”

In junior high action Curwensville won a hard fought, exciting match over the Raiders, 51-45.

Next up for Curwensville, 6-10, is a journey to Grove City Friday and Saturday to wrestle in the Fred Bell Tournament.  A total of 28 teams are entered for the two day event.
