Ridgway Has Easy Time Handling The Golden Tide, 70-31

RIDGWAY – The Ridgway Area High School boys basketball squad ran its record to 12-3 with a convincing 70-31 beating over the visiting Curwensville Golden Tide on Tuesday evening on the Elkers’ home turf.

The Elkers defeated the Golden Tide the first time they played this season, back in Curwensville on December 14,  by a score of 59-37.

As Tide head coach Shane Pentz said afterwards, “We, for whatever reason, didn’t come ready to compete tonight.  The fact is, we know we can play better than this. Things got out of hand early on when we got into some foul trouble. Ridgway is a very good, sound basketball team, but the foul trouble in the first half took us out of our game.”

The Tide had their only lead of the night early in the first quarter as Tanner Elensky and Brett Gardner hit back to back three-pointers giving Curwensville the edge at 6-4.

Ridgway then finished the first quarter with 13 unanswered points to go out in front by 11 after one, 17-6.

With a 25-6 bulge in the second quarter, the Elkers actually went on a 38-6 run to end the first half after the Tide had that early 6-4 lead.

The Elkers would gain the mercy rule mid-way through the fourth quarter to end the mismatch on a very cold January night.

Jesse Reynolds lead Ridgway with 19 points, followed by Sam Roselli and his 13.  Brett Gardner dropped in 10 for the Tide.

The Elkers connected on eight three pointers in the one-sided victory.

Pentz also said, “We need to get ready for tomorrow night (Wednesday), and we need to win.  Hopefully we can put this one past us, and quickly.”

In the junior varsity contest Ridgway came away the winners, easily knocking off the young Tide, 41-8.

The Tide, now 1-11 on the year, will be at home on Wednesday night when they entertain Kane with the JV game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
