Lady Bison Unable To Make Big Halftime Lead Hold Up

MILL HALL — Central Mountain erased an 11-point halftime deficit with a 22-point third quarter and then outlasted visiting Clearfield 45-41 in scholastic girls basketball action Monday night.

The Lady Bison (4-8) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and, with Breanna Peters and Dakota Farmery scoring all their points, led 12-8 at the first period buzzer.

Coach Joey Castagnolo’s team limited the hosts to two points in the second period while stretching its advantage to 21-10.

The Lady Wildcats, who were playing without their top two pointmakers and rebounders,  clawed back after intermission to extend their winning streak to three games.

“They played with a lot of momentum in the second half, and we just couldn’t stop them,” Castagnolo said. “They kept on triple-teaming our posts, and we couldn’t hit our outside shots.”

Peters and Farmery again were the only Lady Bison to score in the back-and-forth fourth quarter, which the Lady Wildcats carried 13-10.

Peters wound up with a game-high 20 points, and Farmery tallied 14.

Sparking the Central Mountain (5-8) comeback were sophomore Kara Heckman with 11 of  her 15 points, senior Johnna Garbrick with all nine of her points and junior Shelbe Walker with seven of her 11.

Injuries kept Lady Wildcat  junior Sarah Henson (11.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg) and senior Kara Heckman (10.6 ppg and 6.0 rpg) on the bench.

In the prelim, coach Jerry Stewart’s Lady Bison jayvees were victorious, 35 -18.

Clearfield resumes its Mountain League schedule Wednesday with a trip to Philipsburg-Osceola and then will host District 9 Class AAA rival St. Marys Friday.
