WESTOVER – A good old ride in the country was just what the Curwensville girls basketball team needed Thursday, as the Lady Tide broke a four game losing streak in defeating Harmony on the Lady Owls home turf by a score of 66-28.
The Tide defeated the Lady Owls in Curwensville on December 19, 60-15, and this win gives Curwensville its first victory of calendar year 2013 and improves to 5-4 overall.
The Lady Tide ended the night with three players in double figures with Ciara Strickland leading all scorers with 21 points, followed by 16 from Rebecca Johnson and 10 from Katrina Seaburn in a well balanced Curwensville attack.
After the win Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken said, “It was obviously very nice to get a win, a badly needed win at that. The girls came out ready to play tonight in the first half and it certainly showed as just about everything we put up seemed to drop in.”
Curwensville had its best half of the year, scoring 40 points, to take a 27 point lead at the intermission, 40-13.
In the second 16 minutes the Lady Tide would also outscore host Harmony 26-15 to coast to the easy win.
Sophomore Jolene Brink paced the Lady Owl attack with 14 tallies.
McCracken also took time to praise one of his players for their team play, saying “Heather Thorp had eight assists tonight, with, as usual, unselfish play on her part. She is always looking for an open teammate to feed the ball to. She (Thorp) takes a lot of pride in assisting others to score.”
Harmony won the junior varsity game, beating the Lady Tide by two points.
A big task lies ahead for the Lady Tide when they travel to St. Marys on Tuesday to play the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic. JV action begins at 6 pm with the varsity tilt to immediately follow.
