TYRONE — A 27-point performance by senior guard Nicole Gripp propelled Tyrone past visiting Clearfield 60-49 in Mountain League (ML) schoolgirl basketball action Wednesday night.
The senior guard poured in six of the Lady Eagles’ 10 three-pointers that were the difference in the outcome.
Alayna Hettinger chipped in with a pair of treys and 10 points for Tyrone (7-3), which is tied for first place in the ML with Bald Eagle Area at 5-0.
Gripp, averaging more than 17 points a game, and Hettinger, one of three Lady Eagles scoring at a nine-plus clip, are two of the four returning starters from the 2011-12 team that won the league championship and was District 6 Class AAA runner-up.
Clearfield (3-7, 1-4 ML) did close to within five points, 27-22, at halftime after falling behind early, but Tyrone widened the spread to 11 with 19 points in the third quarter.
Posts Breanna Peters and Dakota Farmery shouldered the bulk of the Lady Bison offense with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
Tyrone’s junior varsity triumphed 21-18 in the prelim.
The Lady Bison will be back on their home hardwood Friday to meet Penns Valley in an ML game.
