CLEARFIELD — In their first home action of the season after two invitationals and an away dual meet, the Clearfield Area High School girl’s and boy’s cross country teams hosted Central and Central Mountain in a Mountain League tri-meet on Tuesday afternoon.
The girls upped their record to 4-0 with a 16-45 blowout over Central and a tight 25-30 win over Central Mountain. The boys split thie races by beating Central 17-44 and losing to Central Mountain 22-35.
Head coach John Jacob was obviuosly pleased with the team effort of the girl’s to knock off Central Mountain, “Courtney Smith and Claire Mikesell really set the pace for the girls by overtaking Central Mountain’s top runner. Both of our girls had an amazing race and didn’t look back when they took the lead before mile two. The end result was two personal best times. Next was Kristi Fox who worked her way up to Central Mountain’s second place runner to make a huge dent in the team standings, also running a personal best time of 22:31. Our next two runners, Emily Aveni and Morgen Turner, put the icing on the cake by over taking Central Mountain’s fourth and fifth place runners. As a coach I was very proud to see the way our girls raced. Coach (Todd) Winters and I knew it was going to take personal best times across the board to have a chance at beating Central Mountain and that is what each girl delivered.”
Curwensville’s Becca Johnson, who competes unattached in dual meets and trains with the Clearfield squad, was the top girl’s finisher in a time of 21:00. Johnson also won her age group in the Presque Isle Half-Marathon on Sunday.
Coach Jacob noted that the boy’s team also ran very well, but was a bit outmatched by the larger school, Central Mountain, “On the boy’s side we had similar results in racing times but Central Mountain was just too much to overcome. Each one of the boys raced a personal best time today and as a coach you can’t ask for more than that. Jon Sponsler, Josiah McClaren, Kenton Climie, Matt McKenzie, and Vince Kovach all ran excellent races to round out the top five and that resulted in their best times. In years past we had trouble competing with such a large team but now all of our runners are seeing that they are capable of running these times. A score of 35-22 is very respectable and we are continuing to set our goals higher and higher.”
Clearfield will be back in action Tuesday September 25 when they travel to Tyrone for a tri-meet with the hosts and Bald Eagle Area.
