Campus Corner: Kalgren Earns National, Regional Honors for With Two Pick-Sixes

RICHMOND, Ind. — Senior cornerback David Kalgren (Curwensville) turned two interceptions into touchdowns with runbacks of more than 40 yards as Oberlin opened the season by defeating host Earlham 33-3 in front of 1,250 fans at Darrell Beane Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Kalgren, who wasn’t in on a tackle for the first time in his 21 starts in the Oberlin secondary, transformed the Yeomen’s three-field goal advantage into a 15-0 lead by returning his first pick 47 yards with two seconds left in the first half.

Then, he halted Earlham’s first possession of the third quarter with an interception he took 43 yards to the end zone.

Kalgren also had punt returns of 26 and 14 yards.

On Tuesday, the 6-0, 195-pounder was one of two corners named to the d3football.com’s first Team of the Week for 2012 and also was selected as the OhioCollegeFootball.com Division III Defensive Player of the Week and the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Oberlin placekicker Erickson Andrews was tabbed as the national Team of the Week kicker by d3sports.com and Beyond Sports Network after booting a school-record four field goals of 24, 35, 48 and 28 yards plus one extra point.

CLARION — Redshirt senior linebacker Nate Sipes (Curwensville) was involved in eight tackles for the Clarion defense that posted the program’s first shutout since 2009 in Thursday evening’s regionally-televised 7-0 victory over Fairmont (W.Va.) State.

A Memorial Stadium partisan-crowd of 4,227 saw the Golden Eagles open a season with a shutout for the first time since 1986, when Fairmont was a 14-0 victim.

Sipes, who also is on the kickoff, punt and punt return units, registered a team-high seven assists to go with one solo stop.

Freshman center Eric White (Clearfield) handled longsnapping duties for the punt, extra point and field goal units in his first game as a Golden Eagle.

ROOT Sports Network of Pittsburgh televised the non-conference game throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia as well as parts of Ohio and New York.

WILLIAMSPORT  — Senior wide receiver Jarrin Campman (Clearfield) pulled in a career-high seven passes for 43 yards, but Lycoming never found the end zone and lost 24-2 loss to The College at Brockport (N.Y.) at newly-turfed David Person Field Saturday afternoon.

Campman’s receptions topped the Warriors in a Middle Atlantic Conference/New Jersey Athletic Conference Challenge game, witnessed by 1,645 fans, and are tied for No. 1 in the MAC after the first weekend of the 2012 season.

He had five receptions in two games last year.

Sophomore Tyler Jenny (Coalport/Glendale High School) started at quarterback for Lycoming and connected on 23 of 42 aerials for 205 yards.

BRONX, N.Y. — Redshirt junior wide receiver Jesse Hoover (Curwensville) caught two passes for 14 yards and freshman running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) returned two kickoffs for 34 yards in Lock Haven’s 55-0 non-conference loss to Fordham in front of 3,404 fans at Jack Coffey Field Thursday night.

The Bald Eagles were held to 126 yards in their 43rd consecutive defeat, the longest current streak in the NCAA.

With the season-opening shutout, Fordham became the fifth Football Championship Subdivision program and the 15th Division I program to record 750 wins.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Redshirt freshman Derek Morgan (Clearfield) recorded one solo stop and assisted on another tackle in his first action as a back-up safety for Slippery Rock Saturday as The Rock roared out of the chute with a 52-6 rout of future Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Seton Hill Thursday night.

A turnout of  8,617 in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium saw The Rock roll up its highest point title since a 54-0 win over Brockport (N.Y.) State in 1972.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Senior kicking specialist Parker Herrington (Clearfield) booted a career-high seven extra points as Air Force Academy defeated Idaho State 49-21 in their non-conference opener that attracted 25,282 fans to Falcon Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Herrington, who was wide right on a 43-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, will take a streak of 31 consecutive PATs into Saturday’s 3 p.m. kickoff at Michigan. The game will be nationally televised by ABC.

NORFOLK, Va. – Redshirt junior center Nick Redden (Clearfield) made his first collegiate start Saturday as Duquesne stayed with highly-ranked Old Dominion for three quarters before the Monarchs pulled away to a 57-23 win before 19,818 fans, their 23rd sellout in a row at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

Redden had missed most of the preseason because of a broken collarbone.

Duquesne led 20-10 at halftime and trailed only 27-23 with 11:50 remaining before Old Dominion lived up to its Football Championship Subdivision rankings of No. 6 by the American Football Coaches Association and No. 8 by The Sports Network.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

LOCK HAVEN — Junior Gwenn Porter (Clearfield) registered a personal-best 16:22.91 for 4,000 meters in Penn State’s 15-50 victory over Lock Haven at the annual Dolan Duals Friday afternoon.

She was the 13th runner, the 11th Lady Lion, to cross the finish line at the West Branch course as Penn State swept the top eight positions.
