WJAC-TV: ARC Staying Busy after Recent Fires

DUBOIS – The Pennsylvania Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross covers Clearfield, Jefferson, Elk and Cameron counties.

In recent months, ARC workers told WJAC-TV that they have been extremely busy. They’ve not only been providing assistance after severe storms, but also recent fires and a rash of arsons in Elk County.

According to data provided by the ARC, they have assisted 35 people since July 1. Patti Micale, disaster services specialist, said that within one-and-a-half months they have provided more than $5,100 in financial assistance to people in need.

Micale said that in order to provide services, the ARC relies on donations. She said the ARC does not receive any funding, and they rely solely on the community.  She said during the last week, they have assisted 14 people.

Micale admits they have responded to many fires in Elk County, which police ruled as arson or suspicious. She said it’s frustrating to use their resources because of another person’s senseless acts.

The ARC continues to look for donations and volunteers. If you’re interested in becoming an ARC volunteer, please call 814-371-2750
