RHODES AND SWEENEY GET FIRST DOG HOLLOW WINS OF SEASON
Press Release by Terry Whetstone
STRONGSTOWN, PA – Scott Rhodes of Somerset picked up his first Townsend Gas and Oil Super Late Model Feature win at Dog Hollow Speedway since 2001 and only his second ever at the speedway.
Jeff Sweeney of Commodor picked up his first win of the season in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Street Stocks.
Repeat winners on Morchesky Auto, Truck and Trailer Trophy night included: Steve Kenawell of East Freedom in the Precise Racing Products Racesaver 305 Sprints, Mike Laughard of Twin Rocks in the Stoystown Auto Wreckers Fastrak Late Models, Adma Pletcher of Tire Hill in the Lias Tire Pure Stocks, Ryan Claycomb of Altoona in the Myers Tire Four Cylinder Sidewinders and John Hayes of Clymer in the Myers Tires Modified Four Cylinders.
Scott Rhodes and Denny Fenton led the Super Late Models to the green flag with Rhodes taking the lead at the start with Steve Everhart moving into second and they stayed that way the entire 25 lap distance. While they set the pace, the action was great back in the pack, as Andrew Gordon was coming from 18th towards the front and on lap 17 he was up to sixth, when he got into the back of Eric Irvin causing a caution. Gordon pitted, and returned to finish 10th. Meanwhile Billy Dickson was just biding his time when the final restart was on lap 21, Dickson began to pour on the power, and as the checkered flag waved he was third. The final top five were: Rhodes, Everhart, Dickson, Dane Laraway and Bobby Stokes. Heat wins went to Rhodes and Stokes.
The Racesaver 305 Sprints hit the track with Brian Walker and Steve Kenawell bringing the field to the start, as Kenawell took the lead and set sail. AS he led, Walker sat second with Bryce Stephens in third and Roger Irvine in fourth, the leader was setting a torrid pace and as the race ended it was Kenawell getting his second win of the season be becoming the first to repeat in the sprint class this season. Walker, Stephens, Irvine and “Cowboy” Jim Kennedy completed the top five.
The Fastrak Late Models were brought down to the start with Mike Laughard and Shane Weaver on the front row, it was Laughard who took the lead and was setting the pace as Andrew Satterlee moved into second immediately as he chased Laughard the whole way with Laughard able to pull away as the laps wound on, but with just two laps to go the caution flew, forcing the field to regroup.
On the restart, Satterlee went to the inside of Laughard and the pair ran side-by-side the final two laps but Laughard wanted the outside groove and it worked, as he held on for the win. Satterlee, Joe Martin, Weaver and Rich Logan completed the top five. The heats were won by Satterlee and Tim Snare Jr.
Only eight Street Stocks pulled into the pits, but it was one of the best races of the night, as Mike Desch out ran fellow front row starter Ray Hickok into the first turn. Desch led the race, with Hickok in second and Joe Kelly third. As the race continued, Jeff Sweeney moved into fourth and Nick Goss moved into fifth and were trying to pull the leaders in, when the first caution waved on lap 14.
The restart saw Sweeney in second and setting his sights on Desch. As the field roared into the first turn, Sweeney went to the bottom, he stayed there until they got into the third and fourth turns, then the white flag waved, with Sweeney in the outside groove, as they got to turn three, Desch moved up just enough to open the bottom as Sweeney went low and took the win with only inches to spare. Desch was second, Goss was third, Kelly was fourth and Matt Hugill was fifth. Goss won the heat.
The Pure Stocks saw Andrew Koenig take the lead from Ed Vogle at the start, but Koenig spun and handed the lead over to second place Adam Pletcher. On the restart Pletcher took the lead and Vogel was second with Matt Krause third. As the race continued Krause was able to get past Vogel as was Joe Gombach III and that’s how the event ended, with Pletcher getting the win over Krause, Gombach, Marshall Detwiler and Justin Queen. The post-race tech saw Gombach disqualified, thus the revised top five saw Vogel in fifth. Heat wins went to Pletcher and Queen.
The Four Cylinder Sidewinder feature wasn’t won until the post-race tech was finished, with Ray Wright leading most of the way, but on lap 9 Sean Fitzpatrick took the lead for two laps, but Wright got the lead back and went on to get the win, until the post-race, when he was disqualified for numerous rules infractions. The official top five saw Ryan Claycomb taking the win with Mark Rematt second, Jack Theys third, Gene Charles fourth and Wild Bill Hassenplug fifth. Heat wins went to Theys, Hassenplug and David Gacka.
Mark Maglet Led Paul Little out of turn four to start the Modified Four Cylinder Feature with Chris Hetrick pulling into second and Maglet setting the pace. He was pulling the field off the turn when car lost power and Maglet drifted to the pits and out of the race. This gave the lead over to John Hayes who was riding second and at the line it was all Hayes over Ray Edwards, Martin Vinosky, Little and Maglet. Maglet also won the heat.
