Mounties Blank Bisons In Five, 10-0

HYDE – The Philipsburg-Osceola high school baseball team used a two-hit performance by Caleb Pepperday to shut out the Clearfield Bisons Friday afternoon, 10-0, at the Bisons Sports Complex in Hyde.

The Mounties improved to 16-4 on the 2012 season as the game was called after five innings due to the ten run rule coming into play.

Back on April 14 the Mounties also handled the Bisons, 12-8.

Pepperday didn’t necessarily overpower the Bisons, picking up just two strike outs, but his performance certainly caught the eye of Clearfield head coach Sid Lansberry, “The young P O (Philipsburg-Osceola) pitcher (Pepperday) did a real nice job this afternoon.  He had us hitting a lot of balls in the air making it tough for us all day.”

The Mounties scored one run in the top of the first and quickly made it 3-0 with two more runs in the top of the second inning.

A triple by Mountie Matt Carpin and a single by teammate Parker Watson highlighted the second inning for Philipsburg-Osceola.

Three more runs would cross the plate for the Mounties in the fourth frame on a double by Rob Smith and singles by Matt Kephart and Mike Marcinko.

With four runs in the top of the fifth inning the Mounties made it 10-0 and by keeping the Bisons scoreless in the bottom of the inning the ten run rule was enforced.

Philpsburg-Osceola collected three more hits in the fifth inning with doubles by Logan Walstrom and Greg Belko and a single by Carpin.

Watson and Carpin each had two hits for the Mounties while both of Clearfield’s hits were doubles by Kyle Kephart and Coleman Kubala.

Lansberry also talked about the performance of his squad, “I am disappointed with our performance today because I thought we played well on Thursday against DuBois.  We let balls drop in and just made too many mistakes in this game.”

The Bison skipper closed with, “Our story this season is we play a good game and then we play a bad game.”

Clearfield, now 4-13, travels to Brookville on Monday to play the Raiders, with the first pitch set for 4:15 pm.
