Bisons Handcuffed by Flying Dutch’s Beimel

HYDE – A dominating pitching performance by Justin Beimel carried St. Marys past the Clearfield Area High School baseball team 6-0 in non-league action at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon.

The duel of District 9 Class AAA rivals was moved to the junior varsity field because of Tuesday’s heavy rains, but it was the Flying Dutch who performed like it was their home diamond.

Especially Beimel.

The 6-3 junior right-hander limited the Bisons to four singles while striking out seven and walking three.

Courtesy runner Michael Wood was the only Clearfield (4-11) runner to touch second base.

He ran for Ronny Ogden, who roped a single to left with two outs in the first inning,  and moved up on Coleman Kubala’s single through the right side.

Beimel, staked to a 3-0 lead, stranded the two Bisons with a strikeout and then retired 10 of the next 11 batters before Jon Janocko ripped a single to left in the fifth.

Clearfield’s other safety was a leadoff single by Cole Kephart in the seventh inning, but he was erased on a double play before Beimel punctuated his impressive shutout with another strikeout.

“He just stifled us,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said. “That’s as good a job as we’ve had against us all year.

“You’ve gotta give him credit. He did a great job. He worked fast, too. He didn’t mess around. That keeps your defense awake, too.”

St. Marys (5-10) quickly broke on top via singles by Mitch Meyer and Dalton Kline and a groundout by Branden Tyger. Beimel’s double over third base and Rudy Gleixner’s flare near the right field line chased home two more runs.

Brandon Vollmer’s hit put Ogden and the Bisons in a 4-0 hole in the second inning.

“That makes it tough, especially when a guy’s throwing (like Beimel),” Lansberry said. “And we just didn’t hit very well.”

Neither did the Flying Dutch after Wyatt Westen relieved Ogden following a leadoff single by Robert Watts in the third frame.

Westen gave up two runs and four hits in five innings, his longest stint in seven appearances. The sophomore right-hander recorded seven strikeouts and issued two free passes.

“Wyatt came in and did a great job,” Lansberry said. “That probably was his best outing of the year.”

The Flying Dutch padded their lead with singletons in the fourth inning on Dalton Kline’s double, a balk and a wild pitch and the seventh on Watts’ single and Nick Burdick’s double.

The Bisons travel to DuBois Thursday for another non-conference game and will be at home again Friday for a Mountain League Allegheny Division make-up against Philipsburg-Osceola.
