ST. MARYS — The Clearfield Area High School boys and girls track teams headed north on Tuesday afternoon to face District 9 rival St. Marys and Johnsonburg.
The boys (4-5) split on the day, upending Johnsonburg 101-49 but was soundly beaten by a strong St. Marys team 110-40.
The girls team, on the other hand, swept their northern opponents raising their season record to 7-2, ensuring their first winning season in 12 years. They handily beat St. Marys 88-53 and just squeked by Johnsonburg 75-74.
The highlight of the evening for Coach John Jacob’s teams was the girls 4×400 meter relay team of Rachel Thompson, Kara Thorp, Morgen Turner, and Courtney Smith.
Jacob had strong feelings on their performance, “Courtney, Kara and Morgen worked hard to get Rachel a lead going into the last leg. This is where Rachel Thompson had the race of the season against St. Marys’ state medal winning distance runner, Adair Gennocro. The race came down to a photo finish, but Thompson was able to hold off Gennocro in what I would consider one of the best races I have seen in my 15-year coaching career.”
A number of Clearfield girls – Smith, Becca Lindstom, Jill Heichel, Lauren Conrad, and Jessica Shomo – had season best times and distances.
A number of the boys hit their stride also, also having season bests.
Coach Jacob noted a few of the boys effforts, “Dylan Graham returned to the 300 hurdles against one of top hurdlers in the district, where Dylan was able to turn in his person best time and run away with a victory. In the 110 hurdles teammate Tyler Stratton pulled out another win and personal best time to cap off a hurdle sweep. Beau Swales had two impressive races in the 100 and 200 meters going up against two of the top sprinters in the district and came away with one victory in the 100m and narrowly missed another in the 200m.”
The teams will be back in action on Friday at the Altoona Invitational.
