Lady Tide Bats Cooled Off By Elk County in 6-1 Loss

ST MARYS – Elk County Catholic’s Taylor Schlimm struck out 12 batters to help defeat the Curwensville Area High School softball team 6-1 on Thursday.  The loss was the second on the season for the Lady Tide who seemed to lose its focus after the first inning.

“We stepped up in the first inning and were very aggressive at the plate,” said Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey.  “I kept waiting for us to put together some hits the rest of the game, but got very discouraged by the number of backward K’s (watched third strikes).  We stopped being aggressive and let one slip away.”

The Tide bats started off hot as Taylor Goodman led off the game with a single up the middle off Schlimm.  A passed ball put Goodman on second then Madi Peterman drove a 2-and-2 pitch up the middle to post a 1-0 lead.

“We were winning after two batters and I was thinking, ‘Alright, Schlimm doesn’t seem that overpowering,” Leigey shared.  “Then, we got cold and left her dominate.”

The Lady Crusaders knotted the score in the bottom of the second as Schlimm opened the second with a single and stole second.  After the first out, Rachel Stauffer singled to plate Schlimm.

The game remained tied until the fourth inning when Stauffer again hit safely.  Taylor DaCanal followed with a triple to chase home the eventual winning run.  A two-out error allowed DaCanal to jog home for a 3-1 lead.

ECC added three runs in the fifth as Stauffer, the number six hitter, completed a perfect day at the plate with a two-run triple.  DaCanal lifted a sacrifice fly to left to complete the scoring at 6-1.

“The bottom of their line-up hurt us the most,” said Leigey.  “We kept their big hitters off the bases , but that’s why there’s nine players on a team.

“Tierra (Shope) pitched well for the most part – just back-to-back walks and the two triples allowed them to do some damage late in the game.”

Shope allowed seven hits while walking just two and striking out one.  The two walks opened the fifth inning before Stauffer’s one-out, two-run triple.

Goodman led the Tide bats with two of the team’s four hits.  Schlimm’s 12 K’s stymied the Curwensville bats, and she walked just one to limit the base runners for the visitors.

“Taylor (Goodman) had the best at bats on the evening,” said Leigey.  “She hit the ball hard three times, and a good play in center field kept her from having three hits herself.  Megan Barrett also battled hard at the plate with a solid hit and working our lone walk of the game.”

Curwensville will look to bounce back into the win column on Monday as DuBois Central Christian invades Riverside Stadium.  The Tide home game is scheduled to start at 4:15.
