CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville cheerleaders will soon be sporting new uniforms, thanks to a $2,000 grant from California Casualty.

Lisa Walnock, a Curwensville Area Education Association teacher, who is also the district’s cheerleading coach, applied for the grant.  Walnock and CAEA leaders accepted the grant on April 12.

Curwensville is among 59 high schools in the country and eight in Pennsylvania that are sharing $75,000 designated to assist struggling athletic programs.

“Youth sports teach teamwork, discipline and that hard work pays off,” said. California  Casualty Chairman and past CEO Thomas Brown. “They’re a valuable complement to lessons learned in school.”

Curwensville Area Education Association President Sue Lemmo said many teachers across the state are pursuing outside financial support from businesses and companies to maintain and keep important school programs.

“We know athletics is an important part of the education that our children receive. But shrinking education funds from Harrisburg is making it more difficult to maintain these programs,” Lemmo said. “We are very appreciative that companies, like California Casualty, are willing to provide support for our public schools and our children.”

California Casualty provides auto and home insurance products to educators, law enforcement, fire fighters and nurses in 44 states.
