CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team picked up win number one of the 2012 season Friday by defeating the visiting Brockway Rovers 8-7 in come from behind fashion.
A four run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning did the trick for Curwensville, who was trailing 7-4 before the late game heroics.
Todd Munchak started the inning for the Tide with a leadoff double, the senior’s second of the game.
Alex Holland followed with an RBI single scoring Munchak, and the comeback was on.
Holland promptly stole second base followed by Tanner Elensky reaching base on an error, one of seven on the afternoon for the Rovers.
Elensky gave the Tide runners on second and third with a stolen base of his own with no outs.
Jordan Russell picked up an RBI as he hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Holland, making the score 7-6 in favor of Brockway.
With Elensky at third base and one out, Boone McGary made it to first base on another Rover error, sending Elensky home with the tying run.
The third error of the inning by Brockway gave Curwensville runners on first and second as Jesse Zorger was the recipient of the Rover miscue.
Curwensville now had McGary at second and Zorger at first when back to back walks to Kyle Johns and Kyle Bloom sent McGary across home plate for what proved to be the winning run.
The Tide actually had a 3-1 margin after two innings by scoring three runs thanks to singles by Johns, Bloom, Holland and the first double by Munchak.
Brockway jumped out in front with two tallies in the third and four more in the top of the fourth inning.
Johns went the distance giving up five hits while striking out nine Rover hitters.
Munchak, Holland and Bloom all had two hits to pace the Tide offense.
Curwensville head coach Denny Johns was understandably happy with the first win for his squad, “It’s always nice to get that first win. I was just really pleased that we didn’t get down after trailing. We struggled early as we just didn’t come up with timely hits, but the guys just kept digging and scratching.”
Then Johns added, “Todd (Munchak) ignited us in the sixth inning with his leadoff double and Kyle (Johns) struggled early but got stronger as the game went on.”
The Tide, now 1-5, is back in action on Monday as they travel to Flinton to battle the Vikings of Glendale in a game that starts at 4:30 pm.
