Curwensville Softball Chases Lady Wolves Off With 5-1 Win

CURWENSVILLE –  The Curwensville Area High School softball team pushed its record to 3-1 on the season with a 5-1 win over visiting Kane Friday afternoon.  The game was a make-up from Wednesday of this week.

Lady Tide sophomore Tierra Shope held the Lady Wolves at bay until the sixth inning when three straight hits led to  a lone run.  Shope allowed just four hits on the night while striking out seven, walking three and hitting one batter in the victory.

“Tierra has been able to metal up when it comes time to shut the door,” said Tide head coach Allen Leigey.  “It would just be more comfortable in the dugout if we didn’t get behind the hitters in the first place.  I’ll take responsibility for giving up the run.  I called the wrong pitch when we were ahead of the batter and she wasn’t fooled by the change-up.”

In that sixth innings Kane’s Sam Ferranto’s double with two runners on brought home the visitor’s lone run.

Curwensville held the lead after the first inning when Taylor Goodman and Tiffany Carter both walked around the first out.  Molly Demchak’s fielder’s choice erased Goodman before Cheyenne Pentz singled to center.  Pentz’ hit jumped past the Wolves fielder and allowed Carter and Demchak to score for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the hosts picked up two more runs as designated player Megan Barrett pounded a 3-and-1 pitch to the left-center wall for a lead-off double.  Senior Hannah Bressler followed with a free pass and a Goodman RBI single plated Barrett.  With Bressler moving to third on the Goodman hit, Madi Peterman followed with a grounder to second that scored the run for a 4-0 Lady Tide lead.

“We’ve been hitting the ball hard and I’ve always thought that our hitting would carry us,” Leigey said.  “I’ve started to get concerned about it though; I thought we should have been able to really rock the Kane pitcher tonight and it didn’t really happen.  We have to start stringing some hits together, especially against the stronger teams that are coming up.”

After giving up the single run in the top of the sixth, the Tide battled to get it back  in the bottom of the frame.  Barrett and Bressler quietly got the inning started again with a walk and a sacrifice bunt.  Melanie Milliron, who took Barret’s place on the base pads, moved to third when a bullet off of Goodman’s bat was knocked down by Kane pitcher Kyla Hoag in self-defense.  With two outs Peterman added the insurance run with a single to right to plate Milliron for the 5-1 final.

“I guess I can’t complain too much,” said Leigey.  “We won the game and did what we had to do.  We worked on defense very hard in practice, and everyone did the little things to keep them off the base paths.  Things that maybe didn’t look like much at the time, but if we don’t make the plays, we could have been in trouble.  We still haven’t been in a lot of game situations yet.”

Pentz and Sarah Wriglesworth paced the Tide with two hits each.  Peterman drove in two runs on the day while Barrett, with a double set the table for the eighth spot in the order to score twice.  Kaila Jamerson slapped out two hits power the Lady Wolves.

Curwensville had not been in a game for over a week and has only played two games in the past two-plus weeks.  However, that is quickly about to change as the Tide takes to the road for three games next week.  Curwensville plays at Glendale on Monday, Johnsonburg on Tuesday and Elk County on Thursday.
