DuBois Central Catholic Defeats Golden Tide 8-5 In Season Opener

CURWENSVILLE – In a game were one team had timely hits and the other did not, DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) defeated the Curwensville Area High School baseball team Tuesday afternoon, 8-5, in the season opener for the Golden Tide.

Curwensville head coach Denny Johns spoke about opening day, “We stranded 10 runners. They got key hits and we did not. But I can’t be too critical of how we played tonight, because in spite of three errors, I thought we play a fundamentally sound game all around.”

The Tide took a early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Boone McGary picked up a two out walk and would score on a Jesse Zorger double to left field.

DuBois Central would take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the second and would hold off the Tide and a bases loaded threat.

The Tide would manage one run in their half of the second inning as Todd Munchak and Brett Gardener hit back-to-back one out singles.

Alex Holland would reach on a Cardinal error with Tanner Elensky then singling to left field to drive home Munchak making the score 3-2 in favor of DCC.

Unfortunately, as coach Johns had mentioned, the Tide couldn’t come up with a timely hit and would leave the bases loaded.

Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Curwensville would pick up three runs after one out was recorded.

Gardner was hit by a pitch by Cardinal starter Alex Allender with Elensky reaching base on a two out DCC error.

With runners on first and second Hunter McCracken would pick up an RBI with a single to right field that scored Gardner.

After another DCC error, which moved Tide runners to second and third, Boone McGary would pick up two RBI’s of his own with a single to center that allowed Elensky and McCracken to score.

It would be the final tallies on the day for Curwensville while DuBois Central Catholic would add two insurance runs in the top half of the sixth.

Pat Sayers and Ben Miknis each had three hits for the Cardinals on the afternoon.

Johns closed with, “It is a disappointing way to get out of the gate, but I am not all disappointed with the effort we put forth in what was a pretty good ballgame.”

The Tide will travel to Woodstock, Virginia on Saturday to play in the four team “Harry Combs Classic.” Curwensville will start off with a 1:15 pm game against Broadway High School out of Virginia.

Curwensville will then play either East Hardy High School from West Virginia or Central High School from Virginia in the nightcap, also on Saturday.

The Golden Tide will have a home game on Monday at 4:15 pm against visiting Brookville.
