Johnsonburg Stings Lady Tide 54-31

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg girls basketball team continued it’s dominance over Curwensville Friday night at Johnsonburg Area High School by beating the Lady Tide 54-31.

The Ramettes had beaten the Lady Tide earlier this season on January 10 in Curwensville, 61-22.

The Lady Tide played tough for most of the first quarter and only trailed 17-11 going into the second period. The Ramettes had taken a 10-point lead 17-7 early in the first but the Lady Tide fought back thanks to six first quarter points by junior Rebecca Johnson.

Johnsonburg turned up the defense for the second stanza, holding the Tide to just three points, all on free throws by Savannah Strickland.

In fact the Lady Tide didn’t score their first point of the second period until Strickland hit a free throw with 1:11 before the intermission.

The Ramettes took control of the contest with a 13-3 bulge in period number two to lead at the break 30-14.

To the credit of the Lady Tide they hung with Johnsonburg in the third period only being outscored 12-11, but it was the fourth quarter that put the game away for the Ramettes.

In the fourth and final frame Johnsonburg, with a record of 11-7, again played good defense in winning the final eight minutes 12-6 .

The Ramettes had Brittany Watts with 15 and Chelsea Benson with 14 to power their offense while Ciara Strickland paced the Lady Tide, scoring 10.

Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken talked about the road defeat, “We do have a few girls that haven’t been feeling well the past few weeks but tonight one of our biggest problems was having trouble with their (Johnsonburg) diamond and one defense. We need to work on that one.”

Then McCracken summed up the evening’s activities with, “I keep telling the girls that when we play hard we can play with anybody. We just need to be more consistent on offense which includes being more confident when we have the ball. If we can just relax some we can make good shots.”

In the junior varsity contest it was Johnsonburg coming away with a 39-21 victory over the Lady Tide.

Curwensville, now 5-12, will host Sheffield on Tuesday night at Patton Hall. The junior varsity game will begin at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
