Golden Tide Beaten on Road at Brockway 59-37

BROCKWAY – The Curwensville High School boys basketball team lost for the second time this season to the Brockway Rovers on Friday night in Brockway 59-37.

Earlier in the 2011-12 campaign the Rovers dumped the Tide 73-31.

This time around the Curwensville boys put up a much better fight even with the 11th loss of the year.  The Tide have one win under its belt thus far.

Brockway won all four quarters and maintained an 11-point lead at the intermission at 26-15.

Curwensville continued to play hard to start the second half and were out-pointed by the Rovers just 11 to eight in the third period.

With the Rovers out in front after three periods, 37-23, the Curwensville defense found the going tough in the final eight minutes and surrendered 22 points. The Tide offense had its best period with 14 in the losing effort.

Kyle Johns of Curwensville led all scorers with 18 and Tide coach Shane Pentz commented about the play of his sophomore, “Johns (Kyle) had a real good night with 18 points and I believe that is four straight games in double figures for him. He is really coming along offensively for us.”

Then Pentz said, “We had a lot of difficulty to start the second half and had a drought were we didn’t score for the first four and a half minutes of the third period. The Brockway half-court press bothered us at the beginning of the third period and we had just too many turnovers. We just didn’t get any shots off.”

Brockway didn’t have anyone in double figures but the Rovers did hit for seven three-pointers on the night and had all 13 players put points on the board.

The Rovers also were victorious in the JV contest in beating Curwensville 38-16.

The Golden Tide is scheduled to meet up with DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) on Monday in DuBois. The JV game starts at 6 pm and the varsity will follow immediately.

DCC beat the Golden Tide 72-26 in the first meeting on January 6.
