St. Marys Deals Lady Bisons Tough Loss, 55-51

HDYE – At just five foot three inches, junior guard Adair Gennocro of the St. Marys Lady Dutch was the best player on the hardwood Thursday night at Clearfield High School.

Gennocro was so good that she pretty much defeated the Lady Bisons of Clearfield all by herself by scoring 30 points and dishing out more than a handful of assists as St. Marys knocked off Clearfield 55-51.

The Lady Bisons appeared to show two faces in the game. The first half face was the team that had won six of it’s last seven games. The second half team looked out of confidence and poise.

A dejected Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo said, “It was a devastating loss. We just weren’t the same team in the second half tonight like we had been the last several games. We played without confidence in the second half, like we showed especially in the past two games, for whatever reason.”

Both teams had players in the first quarter that were somewhat on fire as Gennocro scored 12 points in quick fashion while Kristen Butler and Breanna Peters of Clearfield each poured in eight as the two squads went to the second period knotted at 16 each.

The Lady Bisons had it’s best eight minutes of play in that second quarter as they outscored the Lady Dutch 13-7 to take a 29-23 halftime lead.

Peters would add six more points for Clearfield in the second frame to give her 14 before the break while Gennocro would add five more to up her first half total to 17.

Then came the Clearfield team that no one recognized in the second half as St. Marys used a 22 point third quarter to go up by four at the end of the third eight minutes of play 45-41.

Early in the third period the Lady Bisons took a six point, 34-28 lead on a three pointer by Lisa Ambuski before the “different” team took over the Clearfield court.

That “different” team just couldn’t find an answer for Gennocro and friends as St. Marys kept the lead to finish the game with victory number eight on the season against seven losses.

Clearfield did cut the lead to one, 45-44, on a three-pointer by senior Rachel Thompson to start the final period and later got it to within two, 51-49, on a bucket by Dakota Farmery.

Peters paced Clearfield with 18 points and Butler added 14 as the Lady Bisons fell to 10-5 on the year.

St. Marys also had reserve freshman Taylor Schutz add 11, mostly on feeds from Gennocro.

Castagnolo closed with, “This was a tough loss for us. We did play well in the first half but again for whatever reason we didn’t answer the bell in the second half.”

The junior varsity game was also won by St. Marys as they defeated the young Lady Bisons 46-33 in the evening’s first contest.

Clearfield is right back in action on Friday night when they make the long journey to play Juniata. The JV game will start at 6 pm with the varsity to follow immediately.
