Bisons Turn the Tables on Huntingdon 58-51

HUNTINGDON – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball team made the long bus trip to Huntingdon Wednesday night a profitable one as they turned the tables on the Bearcats 58-51 to stop a four game losing streak.

Huntingdon had beaten the Bisons in the first game of the year for both teams on December 13, 49-46 in overtime at Clearfield.

Not this time though as Clearfield, after falling behind early, took control of the game at the start of the second period and once they gained the lead they never looked back.

It was win number six against eight defeats for Clearfield and head coach Forrest Campman on the 2011-12 campaign.

Campman was very pleased with the effort and, of course, the win, “I thought we played two really good quarters and two that we didn’t play well. We came out trying to be fast in our game which worked out okay as we got to the speed level we wanted.”

Huntingdon jumped out to an early 9-2 lead before the Bisons went on an 8-0 run to go in front 10-9 thanks in part to a three pointer by junior reserve Seth Beardsley.

The Bearcats would regain the lead late in the first quarter to have a 13-10 edge moving into the second eight minutes.

Huntingdon shot 10 first quarter free throws, making seven, on seven Bison fouls.

Clearfield did a lot well in the second period. The Bearcats didn’t get a free throw in that stretch because the Bisons didn’t commit one foul in the second stanza and senior Robbie Myers came alive scoring eight of his team high 17 points.

Two free throws by Myers with just 54 seconds left in the first half put Clearfield up 26-20 before the Bearcats hit the final field goal of the first 16 minutes as the Bisons took a four point margin into intermission.

Clearfield would pull away from Huntingdon by as many as 12 points in the third period as Christian Lezzer, a Bison sophomore, hit two treys in the period, one coming with 4:53 to go putting the Bisons up 34-22.

The Clearfield margin would shrink to as close as eight points in the third frame a few times but the Bisons would continue to answer, keeping the lead at 10 or more most of the time. The third quarter would end 40-32 in favor of Clearfield.

Both teams traded buckets over the final eight minutes of action but Huntingdon could never draw close enough to threaten the Bisons chance of a much needed victory.

Helping Myers with the Clearfield attack was Lezzer and Trey Jordan with 12 each. It was the second contest in a row that Myers, Lezzer and Jordan hit for double figures.

Huntingdon was led by Ralph Zoerner with 18 points followed by Houston Riley, who dumped in 16. Zoerner had four three-pointers in the game.

Campman closed with, “We are starting to score some points now and starting to score with balance. We know we can play with anybody, we just need to show we can win against anybody. I really believe we are getting better because this team and these kids have practiced very well over the last two weeks.”

The Bearcats came up victorious in the junior varsity game by beating the Bisons 37-28.

Clearfield will be home on Friday night when they entertain Juniata with JV action starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
