Golden Tide Claim Second Place at Coudy Duals with 4-1 Record

COUDERSPORT – The Curwensville Area High School wrestling team won four of five matches to earn the second place trophy at the Coudersport Duals Saturday.

A quartet of matmen went undefeated while four others lost only one time as the Golden Tide improved to 5-3 by defeating Coudersport 54-23, Lackawanna Trail 42-36, Athens (N.Y.) 60-18 and Sheffield 60-15 after losing a see-saw tussle with Lewisburg 41-36.

Bradford also finished 4-1 in the eight-team event, with its loss also to champion Lewisburg, but Curwensville was awarded the runner-up hardware because of a closer match against the once-beaten Green Dragons from District 4.

“That probably was the match of the day,” Golden Tide coach Duane Wriglesworth said. “Lewisburg always shows up with a stacked team and is very tough. They’ve won it the last three years.

“So, I was very happy with our performance.“

Leading the way for the Golden Tide were Chad Desmett (8-4) with five falls at 182 and 195 pounds and Jake Keller (12-0) with four pins and a technical fall at 138.

Tyler Mays (11-1) registered a fall, two decisions and two forfeits at 120, while Sam Bressler (9-4) parlayed two falls with three forfeits at 106.

Right behind at 4-1 were Dakota Royer with three falls and a forfeit at 152, Ricky Magnuson with pairs of pins and forfeits at 220 and freshman Travis Lansberry with a pin for his first varsity victory and three forfeits at 113.

Spencer Smeal at 285 also had only one setback, then rebounded to reel off three consecutive falls.

“That was a treat to see that many kids go 5-0 or lose only once,“ Wriglesworth. “Desmett was able to secure a defensive fall against Lewisburg, and that was very exciting to see. He pinned one of their better wrestlers and really gave our team a lot of momentum for the rest of the day.

“Even though we didn’t win that match, we came very close.”

Desmett’s execution of a new move against Dan Ostrowsky (12-2) put the Golden Tide in front 30-29, but the Green Dragons pulled it out with falls by undefeated Brandon Smith (12-0) at 195 and Kyle Santorine (9-4) at 285 around a forfeit to Magnuson at 220.

Wriglesworth noted Desmett was able to implement a counter his squad had just worked on in practice because Punxsutawney used a lot of crab ride technique in beating the Golden Tide earlier in the week.

“Ostrowsky had Desmett in a crab ride, and Desmett reached back and secured his opponent’s head, arched back and bridged to keep him from sliding out from underneath,” Wriglesworth explained.

Size was a factor in the meet-deciding heavyweight bout, according to Wriglesworth.

“We had to move Spencer up, and he wrestled a kid who was much bigger than him,” Wriglesworth said.  “Even though he got pinned, he was in control until he just got caught.

“He really did a nice job holding his own (the rest of the day).”

Brandon Sass at 126 and Austin Pollick at 160 matched 3-2 records.

“I was very proud of Sass’ performance against tough competition,“ Wriglesworth said. “That’s probably best I’ve seen him wrestle so far. He was good on double-leg takedowns and tough on top.“

Curwensville will welcome Redbank Valley to Patton Hall Thursday night. The Bulldogs sport a pair of one-sided wins in dual meets to go with championships in the season-opening Hickory Tournament and their own holiday tourney.
