DuBois Central Catholic Handles The Lady Tide 67-25

DUBOIS – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) girls basketball team used a multitude of turnovers by Curwensville and balanced scoring on it’s part to send the Lady Tide to it’s fourth straight loss, 67-25 Friday night in DuBois.

Head coach Tom Stafford’s Lady Cardinals improved to 4-7 on the season while Rusty McCracken’s Curwensville squad fell to 1-6.

Coach McCracken spoke about the loss, “Unfortunately we haven’t been showing a whole lot of improvement lately. We didn’t shoot well from the line and missed a lot of lay-ups on the fast break.”

The Lady Cardinals also used a smothering press to force many of the turnovers and McCracken commented on that part of the game, “I know we can beat the press and one of the reasons we didn’t tonight was because we just haven’t passed the ball well enough. That is an area we are struggling with right now.”

DuBois Central Catholic used the press and a hot hand by Lauresa Gulvas in the first period to race out to a 21-3 lead after the first eight minutes were recorded.

Gulvas had 10 first quarter points of her game high 19 to pace the balanced scoring attack by the Lady Cardinals. The senior would then wait until the third frame to add the other nine points to finish her night.

DCC jumped out to a 14-2 bulge before Katrina Seaburn of Curwensville hit the front end of a one and one to make it 14-3 only to see the Lady Cardinals score 10 unanswered tallies to soar to a 24-3 lead.

The Lady Cardinals had a comfortable edge at the intermission leading the visitors from Curwensville 28-9 before another high scoring quarter,  by outscoring the Lady Tide 24-8 in the third to basically ice the game.

It was 42-13 late in the third quarter before the Curwensville girls found some offense; but the damage was already done and all that was left was the fourth period which DCC also controlled 15-8 to set the margin of victory at 42.

Sophomore Kylee Schaffer of DCC helped out Gulvas with 13 points off of the bench while Aundrea Snyder chipped in with 11 in the Lady Cardinal balanced scoring attack.

The DuBois Central Catholic bench shut out the Lady Tide bench by outscoring Curwensville 29-0.

Curwensville was led in scoring by freshman Ciara Strickland who would hit double figures on the evening with 11.

There were a total of 42 personal fouls called in the game.

McCracken wasn’t sure about any positives he could find from the game saying “I am not real sure if there was a positive out there tonight but perhaps tomorrow (Saturday) in practice we will find some. We certainly won’t give up on these kids and I still believe we have 10 wins in us but we need to improve real soon to reach that goal.”

In the junior varsity contest it was Curwensville coming up with the win over the Lady Cardinals by a score of 33-17.

The Lady Tide will be at home Monday against the Harmony Lady Owls. The JV game will start at 6 pm and the varsity battle will immediately follow.
