Curwensville Lady Tide Pick Up First Win, Beat Ridgway 39-22

CURWENSVILLE – It was a sweet night at Patton Hall for the Curwensville Lady Tide basketball team as they picked up their first win of the season, 39-22 over visiting Ridgway.

The win on the Lady Tide’s home court sets their record at 1-2 for the 2011-12 campaign and Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken saw a few reasons why his team picked up the “W”, “We limited our turnovers to only 13 tonight, which may be an all time low in my three years here. So we handled the ball pretty well in not turning it over. I also believe that our man to man defense led to our offensive output getting better in the third and fourth quarters.”

The Lady Tide started out slowly for the third straight game only scoring four first quarter points to go into the second stanza knotted at 4-4.

Then the girls of Curwensville turned it up a notch or two both offensively and defensively as they outscored the Lady Elkers 13-3 in the second quarter to take a 17-7 halftime lead.

If the second frame was good, the third one was even better as the Tide put the game away with a 20-5 run to go comfortably into the fourth eight minutes with a huge margin of 37-12.

McCracken continued with, “I thought we played well against a bigger team this evening. Seaburn (Katrina), Carter (Tiffany) and Shope (Tierra) did a good job of controlling the boards. Offensively Ciara (Strickland) and Rebecca (Johnson) picked it up on the offensive end.”

Tide freshman Ciara Strickland paced all scorers with 12 points while Rebecca Johnson, a junior, added eight to help secure the win.

The Curwensville junior varsity squad also came up with a big win in beating the Lady Elkers 51-21 behind Tiara Bumbarger’s 27 points.

McCracken ended his comments in talking about the Lady Tide Basketball Booster Club, “The Lady Tide Booster Club would like to thank all those who made and participated in the Toys For Tots night a huge success at our game.”

The Lady Tide won’t return to action until Thursday, December 28 when they host the Clearfield Lady Bisons with the junior varsity contest starting at 6 pm and the varsity tilt to immediately follow.
