Campus Corner: Krchnak Posts NCAA-II ‘B’ Cut Qualifying Times in Two Zippy Invitational Events

MEN’S SWIMMING
 
AKRON, Ohio – Junior Mark Krchnak of Clearfield turned in season-best, NCAA Division II ‘B’ cut qualifying times in two individual events and swam the breaststroke legs for two medley relay teams that also posted national ‘B’ cut qualifying times as Clarion piled up 1,087 points for a fourth-place finish behind three Division I squads at the Zippy Invitational in the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium last weekend.
 
On Saturday, the Golden Eagle breaststroke specialist earned the silver medal in the 100-yard race with a time of 57.11 seconds that was bettered only by Buffalo junior Josh Meints’ meet record-setting 56.54.
 
Krchnak came back Sunday with a 2:06.23 effort in the 200 final, moving up from sixth to claim third place by closing with a 32.74-second time for the last 50 yards.
 
In the 50 freestyle prelims Friday, Krchnak placed 36th among 60 entries with a season-best 22.48 time.
 
He swam the second fastest breaststroke leg, 56.32 seconds, for the Clarion 400 medley relay team that finished fifth in 3:25.41
 
Friday and the third fastest breaststroke leg, 25.57 seconds, for the Golden Eagle 200 medley relay foursome that placed fourth in 1:33.29 Saturday.
 
Krchnak also logged a 21.95 second leg for the Clarion ‘B’ 200 freestyle relay team that wound up seventh with a 1:27.16 clocking Friday.
 
Army won the nine-team meet with 1,832 points, followed by Buffalo with 1,550 and Xavier with 1,292.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
 
NEW WILMINGTON – Junior guard Matt Shiner of Clearfield scored three points, grabbed two defensive rebounds and had one steal as Westminster (2-4) split its first two Presidents’ Athletic Conference games last week.
 
He played nine minutes in both games, a 77-66 loss to St. Vincent (5-1, 1-0) in Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday night and a 74-71 road win over Waynesburg (2-5, 0-2) Saturday afternoon.
 
Shiner, who started the first four games for the Titans, has 32 points for a 5.3 average, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
LINCOLN, Ill. – Sophomore Brandie Centi of Clearfield was one of the Lincoln freestylers who competed in the third annual Phonex Fall Classic hosted by the University of Chicago Nov. 18-20.
 
She placed 22nd in the 100-yard event with a time of 1:00.06, 25th in the 50 free in 26.99 seconds and 25th in the 200 free in 2:26.68.
 
The Lynx finished fourth in the 10-team meet with 387 points.
