RIDGWAY — The Clearfield boys and girls cross country teams competed at the District IX championships on Saturday at the Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
Neither squad was able to advance any runners to the state meet, but there were some strong individual runs noted by head coach John Jacob, “As a team we didn’t have a good showing but we had some outstanding individual performances. Rachel Thompson had her breakout race of the season and was our top finisher, which almost earned her a trip to the state meet. Emily Aveni and Courtney Smith also raced very well finishing second and third on the team. Both girls used very different strategies with Emily going out a little faster and Courtney starting out slow which resulted in some very high places for both first year runners. For the boys, John Sponsler was the top finisher and came within two spots of qualifying for the state meet. The times were all very slow because of the cold, wet and snowy conditions so it is hard to compare times.”

Bradford won the girl’s AAA team title, while St. Marys won the boy’s crown.
