Red Cross Partnership with Grainger Gains National Recognition
The Ready When the Time Comes partnership between the American Red Cross and Grainger has been selected as one of five finalists for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) 2011 Partnership Award.
The winner is selected by an online vote open to the public from September 19 through October 28.
The Partnership Award, one of four Corporate Citizenship awards from the BCLC, honors a company and a charitable organization that have exemplified success working together to address an important social issue.
W.W. Grainger Inc. is the founding sponsor of the Ready When the Time Comes program, in which employees of participating companies and organizations are trained as Red Cross disaster volunteers to serve in an emergency.
“Grainger’s expertise in logistics, supply chain and product distribution keeps businesses running and is a crucial asset in times of disaster. It is only logical that the company has partnered with the American Red Cross. Together they are recognized for their work to help communities prepare for and respond to disasters,” said Stephen Jordan, U.S. Chamber BCLC Founder and Executive Director.
“Given that Grainger is the national founding sponsor of the American Red Cross Ready When the Time Comes corporate volunteer program, which has trained nearly 14,000 employees from more than 460 organizations across the country ready to activate in a time of disaster, we are pleased that this business-nonprofit collaboration is a 2011 Best Partnership Award finalist.”
As a result of this program, now in its tenth year, more than 13,000 employees from 460 businesses and organizations in 52 cities have been trained as Red Cross disaster volunteers. Over the past two years, the number of trained volunteers has doubled and the program has been established in all critical disaster zones across the country.
Ready When the Time Comes teams of volunteers from a range of companies have been part of the Red Cross response to disasters this year, such as the deadly tornadoes that wrecked havoc in the South and Midwest, record-setting flooding along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, or Hurricane Irene’s damaging from North Carolina to New England.

Disaster Services:
The American Red Cross continues to work with individuals and families in the Central and Eastern Pennsylvania affected by Hurricane Irene in August and the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee earlier in September. To date over 7,000 people have stayed overnight in Red Cross shelters in Pennsylvania, served over 85,500 meals and distributed over 9,000 cleanup kits. over 1,300 volunteers have worked to provide these services.
Volunteers from across the four counties continue to provide disaster services to those in need. In July, volunteers responded to three local disasters and provided food, shelter, and clothing to those in need.
Monthly disaster team meetings allow for volunteers to gather to discuss recent disaster responses, learn new disaster operation techniques or practice on current ones, find out about other Red Cross volunteer opportunities and network with other volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a Red Cross disaster volunteer, you are invited to attend a Disaster team meeting in your area or contact the chapter office for more information. All meetings start at 6:00 PM.

Blood Services
American Red Cross continues emergency donor appeal
American Red Cross officials state that blood inventories remain low, approximately 50 to 80 percent below sufficient levels, prompting an emergency donor appeal.
The American Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations to increase blood inventory levels. All blood types are needed, but types O positive, O negative, A positive and A negative are experiencing particularly high demand.
“We are working to avoid a potential crisis for patients at the more than 90 hospitals we serve,” stated John Hagins, CEO. “Donor turnout has improved since we announced the emergency appeal last week; however, it may take weeks of strong donor turnout to fully replenish supplies at hospitals and our regional reserves. Without your continuing help, patients are at risk for not receiving the transfusions they need.”
Individuals can call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-700-733-2767) or go online at www.redcrossblood.org to find blood drives in their area and schedule an appointment. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-in donors are welcome.
