SHIPPENSBURG – Junior linebacker Nate Sipes of Curwensville came off the bench to lead the Clarion (0-3) defense with 12 tackles, all but one of them solo stops, and also recovered a fumble for a career performance Saturday afternoon, but the host Red Raiders turned a 24-14 halftime lead into a 54-24 runaway.
Sipes didn’t make his first tackle until late in the first quarter of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game in front of 3,000 fans at Seth Grove Stadium fans.
His fumble recovery at the Clarion 5-yard-line short-circuited a Shippensburg drive with the Golden Eagles clinging to a 7-3 lead.
Redshirt senior Shawn Sopic of Curwensville was credited with three solo tackles and two assists for Clarion, which wound up surrendering 563 yards.
Sipes is the top Golden Eagle defender in both solo stops (15) and assists (13). His 28 tackles rank fifth in the PSAC.
Sopic is tied for third on the team with 16 tackles, including six solos.

CHESTER – Junior wide receiver Jarrin Campman of Clearfield scored his first collegiate touchdown in a furious second half comeback by Lycoming (2-1) that fell just short of wiping out Widener’s 31-0 halftime lead in their Middle Atlantic Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
The Pride (3-0) held on for a 31-28 win to delight most of the 3,565 fans at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Campman’s 35-yard catch-and-run TD came with 1:56 remaining, but the Warriors had time for only one more play after regaining possession.
With four other receptions, Campman established a career high with 72 yards.
His 13 receptions are tops and his 119 receiving yards are second for the Warriors, who were on the list of “other teams receiving votes” in last week’s D3football.com Top 25 Poll.

OBERLIN, Ohio – Junior corner back David Kalgren of Curwensville made six solo tackles for an Oberlin (1-1) defense that held its own against the College of Wooster (1-2), but the visiting Fighting Scots escaped Savage Stadium with a 14-3 victory as the Yeomen squandered all but one of their scoring opportunities.
Kalgren also returned one punt for 13 yards and three kickoffs for an average of 29 yards.
His two-game totals are eight solo stops and one assist, two punt runbacks for a 10.5 average and four kickoff returns for a 30.5 average.

KUTZTOWN – Redshirt sophomore Jesse Hoover of Curwensville caught two passes for 13 yards for Lock Haven (0-2) in a 49-6 loss to national power Kutztown (3-0) at University Field Saturday evening.
The Bears showed the crowd of 5,253 why they boasted the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s No. 1 offense going into the crossover clash while extending the Bald Eagles’ losing streak to 34 games.
Hoover leads the Bald Eagles with nine receptions and 152 receiving yards.

PITTSBURGH – Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Nick Redden of Clearfield saw extensive action at both center and guard as Duquesne (2-1) rolled up 628 yards, the most since 2003, in blitzing Valparaiso (Ind.) 49-14 in front of 1,859 fans at Rooney Field Saturday.
The Dukes had two 100-yard rushers, Larry McCoy (21 carries-164 yards) and Bill Bair (16-154), for the first time since 2002, in amassing 325 yards on the ground to hand the Crusaders their 23rd consecutive loss, the longest streak in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.
Redden also blocked on the extra point and punt units for the Dukes.
Nick and younger brother Andrew will be on opposite sidelines Saturday night when the Duquense and St. Francis meet in their Northeast Conference opener at Loretto. The 7 p.m. game will be televised as part of the NEC-TV package and will be aired on Fox8 Altoona/Johnstown (HD) as well as PCNC Pittsburgh and MSG+ (HD).

LORETTO – The redshirt status for freshman linebacker Andrew Redden of Clearfield lasted one week as he played on special team units for St. Francis (1-2) Saturday when the Red Flash wiped out a 19-point deficit in the fourth quarter to thrill 1,585 fans at DeGol Field with a 50-49 win over Morehead (Ky.) State (1-2).
Kyle Harbridge of Easton starred for St. Francis with school and Northeast Conference record 346 rushing yards, 457 all-purpose yards that missed the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision mark by just 10 yards, and five touchdowns that also set a new Red Flash standard.
In addition to being named NEC Player of the Week, the junior running back was cited as College Football Performance Awards’ National Performer of the Week and Running Back Performer of the Week, the Sports Network’s National Co-Offensive Player of the Week and a College Sporting News’ National All-Star.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CRESSON – Junior forward Pamela Pride of Clearfield registered five shots in two more shutout losses for Mount Aloysius (0-6) last week.
She had one only two shots in a 6-0 defeat by St. Vincent (2-2) at Greensburg on Tuesday and four of 23 shots the Lady Mounties unloaded on the Chatham (1-5) goalie without success in a 1-0 squeaker at Kimball Field Saturday.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State sophomore Gwenn Porter of Clearfield placed 79th among 115 runners in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on the Blue and White Golf Courses Saturday.
Her time for the 6,000 meters was a career-best 24:58.
She was the 13th finisher for the Penn State ‘B’ squad that placed fifth among the nine teams.
