Program Schedule Announced for July 23 – 31 at Parker Dam

Saturday, July 23

Birding 101:  6 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Do you know someone who can tell you the name of a bird just by hearing its call?  Well, you, too, can learn to become a better birder with a few hints.  We’ll head outside to learn about identifying some of our common (and if we’re lucky– uncommon) songbirds.

A Murder of Crows:  8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Many opinions are out there, but based on what scientists have found out about their intelligence, we should all respect crows a little more.  They are incredibly intelligent, very social, mate for life, and raise their young for up to five years.  Learn more about this fascinating bird and its life.

 Sunday, July 24

How Big Is A Big Tree?  1 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Whether measured to crown a champion, or to find value, trees are often “sized-up.”  Learn more about measuring trees, while they’re still standing.  We will practice our technique on a couple of park trees, and then we’ll take a look at one of the park’s largest trees.

History Walk:  5 p.m. – Beach House Steps

 A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

If you went back 50 years, what might you see?  Would Parker Dam be any different?  How about a hundred years?  Or, back five hundred years?  Learn more about how the area of the park has changed over the years.  We will be walking around the lake and crossing the spillway rocks, so please wear appropriate shoes for the journey.

Saturday, July 30

Beaver Dam Trail:  3 p.m. – Beach House

 A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

This easy, 2-mile hike will take us through areas of the park where it’s common to see or see sign of deer, elk, bear, turkey, and yes, beaver.  Please wear appropriate footwear for walking/hiking.  Also, bring along some water to drink if you think you may need it.

Woodsmen and River Drivers:  6 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

They were here over a hundred years ago, and the work they did was hard.  Little pay and long hours were just some of the hurdles to be overcome when working in the woods.  Learn more about how they cut their timber and delivered it to the sawmill.

The Incredible Journey:  8:30 p.m.- Campground Amphitheater

Take the journey with the monarch butterflies as they make their trip to Mexico.  Scientists will look at just how the monarchs are able to make such a tremendous feat of endurance.

Sunday, July 31

Learn to Kayak:  2 p.m. – back of Beach House

 A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Bring your own, or borrow one of the limited-number of park kayaks, paddles, and PFD’s.  Learn the basics of what a kayak is, how to paddle, safety, and more.  There is a $3 fee for all program participants.  Although not necessary to participate, if you would like to reserve one of the park kayaks, please contact the park office at (814) 765-0630.

Wildlife Murder Mystery:  5 p.m. – Beach House Steps

A crime has been committed.  Can you help solve the mystery?  Learn about how officials solve wildlife crimes and get a chance to be a wildlife detective.
