Repeat Winners Include Dwayne Brooks, Steve Arthurs, Joe Kot, and Doug Surra
Falls Creek – Previous winners were at the top of their game Saturday night at the Hummingbird Speedway in Falls Creek. Dwayne Brooks of Falls Creek continues to be consistently at the front with his third win of the 2011 season in the Limited Late Model class. Also taking his third feature win of the season in the Street Stock division was Joe Kot from Dubois. In the Pure Stock class, Steve Arthurs from Falls Creek, made it win #4. Rounding out the action with his second win in 2011 was Doug Surra from Kersey in the Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder division.
John Chesnalavich Jr. from Reynoldsville led the first feature of the night to the track in his #812 Limited Late Model flanked on the outside by the 10J driven by Bruce Raybuck from Falls Creek. Raybuck jumped to a quick lead with Chesnalavich running close behind. Numerous cautions as well as temporary red flag for technical difficulties with the track lighting system interrupted the race. Thorough the cautions the 10J continued to lead followed closely by Brooks and Chesnalavich. Last week’s winner, Eric Moore driving the 00 car out of Frenchville was fast and into fourth position by mid race. He was racing closely with Derek Rodkey in the 14R car from Osceola Mills as they traded positions racing inside and outside. At the mid-point Brooks made the pass for the lead in lap traffic while Moore slipped into fourth and looking for third. Racing hard Moore was relegated to the back after a caution involving Chesnalavich who received his position back for the restart. As the race wound down Brooks continued to be fast but the 15 of Luke Hoffner from Turbotville had been making his way on the outside rail from his nearly last starting position. Hoffner tried Brooks high and low but Brooks had just enough to keep him at bay taking the win. Hoffner followed him across the line with Chesnalavich Jr., McMillen and Rodkey rounding out the top five.
Heat races were won by Chesnalavich Jr., Moore, and Raybuck.
Ten cars made the call for the starting line up of the Pure Stock feature race. Zach Gustafson, who looked strong last week, was on the pole. Zach drives the 93 car and is from Weedville. He took a quick lead followed by the 25 car driven by Mike Calhoun from Brockway. While Calhoun pressured Gustafson Matt Heindl from St Marys in the familiar 471 car, Colton Joiner in the 1* car from Dubois and Steve Arthurs from Falls Creek driving the 01 car were all battling for third through fifth positions. Arthurs worked his way into second position and began to pressure Gustafson lap by lap. On Lap 11 Arthurs looked inside then on lap 12 he powered his way to the lead. Gustafson put up a good fight till the end but couldn’t muster enough forward momentum to regain the top spot. Arthurs held on for the win with Gustafson finishing second, Heindl third, Joiner fourth and the 46 of Dustin Challingsworth from St Marys coming home in fifth.
Heindl and Arthurs won the Pure Stock heat races.
Street Stocks were next up on the card and Team VSI led the front row to the green flag with the 69R of Brian Rhed flanked by the 28 of Fuzzy Fields. Both teams are from Brockway. Rhed held the lead for a number of laps with Fields looking for a way around him. Joe Kot, who started in the third spot in his Dubois based #37 car, wasted no time in applying pressure to both Fields and Rhed. Another major mover was Colton Gearhart in the T3 from Dubois. Colton started twelfth and worked his way into third by mid race. Other drives who were putting together strong runs included Jamie Price driving the 137 car out of Clearfield, Rich Hemphill from Osceola Mills in the 21R car, and last weeks winner Dan Smeal in the 44 car from Houtzdale. At mid race Kot worked his way by Rhed for the lead while a caution sent Fields to the pits. Rhed remained in second being pressured by Smeal and Price. Also sneaking into the mix was Emory Rinehart Jr. driving the 105 Jr. based out of Morrisdale. Racing was tight behind Kot who held a slight margin. Hemphill was trying to make something happen on the outside. Smeal’s car began to slow and he eventually had to pit for a flat tire bringing Hemphill, Price and Rinehart closer to the front. At the checkered flag it was Kot taking the win followed by Rhed, Hemphill, Price and Rinehart.
Fields and Rhed won the Street Stock heat races.
The Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinders completed their race caution free. Bryan Warren from Curwensville started on the pole in his #5 machine but didn’t hold the lead for long. Doug Surra from St Marys, who started outside Warren, jumped to an early lead in the T3 car and didn’t look back. While Surra led the way Warren didn’t give up trying to make a run at the top spot. Back in the pack racing for third through fifth was tight with the 81 of Mike Lucas from Philipsburg, Shawn Fedder from Clearfield in the 38A and Lee Zalno, also from Clearfield, driving the 77S jockeying for position. Also making his presence known was Aaron Luzier, last weeks winner, in the 5L car from Clearfield. Surra and Warren continued to stretch out their lead while Lucas was trying to make up ground. The lack of a caution spread the field out and no one was dominating enough to move to the front. At the end the winner proved to be Surra, followed by Warren in second, Lucas third, Luzier in fourth and Zalno finishing in fifth.
FWD Four Cylinder heat race winners were Warren and Surra.
