DuBois Erases 10-3 Deficit to Beat Clearfield Legion 17-13

DUBOIS – Clearfield built a 10-3 lead through three innings of Monday’s Jefferson County American Legion League make-up game, but front-running DuBois turned on the power for a 10-run explosion in the fourth frame and went on to outlast the Chiefs 17-13 at Showers Field.

Sean Sleigh’s grand slam home run got DuBois close and Nate Liddle’s three-run homer put the hosts ahead in their rally against loser Tyler Jacobson. Five of the runs in the inning were unearned.

Garrett Peterson and Liddle added solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.

Kyler Kephart enjoyed a career game at the plate for Clearfield (6-11-1) with five consecutive hits, two of them doubles. He drove in two runs and scored three times.

Manager Sid Lansberry’s Chiefs also had their big blows, Steve Miller connecting for a three-run homer in the first inning and Derek Danver going deep with two aboard in the second for an 8-3 lead.

Jon Janocko and Kephart had RBI singles in the third to make it 10-3.

The DuBois infield turned double plays in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The last one was crucial, for the Chiefs had scored two runs to cut their deficit to 13-12 and had the bases loaded.

Miller, who had four RBIs, Janocko, Jacobson and Shane Harper each had two hits for Clearfield.

Liddle wound up with four hits, four RBIs and four runs scored in addition to pitching four innings in relief to earn the win.

Sleigh had a two-run single in the first inning and finished with three hits and six RBIs.

Peterson added two hits and retired the Chiefs in order in the second inning after relieving starter Matt Zimmerman.

Clearfield picked up one run off Kyle Haskins in the seventh.

The Chiefs, 5-5 in the JCL, visit Brookville Tuesday.
