PHILIPSBURG – Chad Speigle’s three-run double highlighted a five-run first inning that springboarded Philipsburg to a 10-2 non-league win over the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 team at the Don Womer Baseball Complex Monday evening.
The Chiefs fell to 2-4 with their second loss in four days to the Phils, who prevailed 20-3 in six innings Friday.
They averted a shutout when losing hurler Jon Janocko homered with Shane Harper aboard via a walk in the second inning.
Winner Aaron Lidgett allowed only one other hit in his four-inning stint. He struck out six and walked one.
Speigle came on to blank the Chiefs on two hits over the last three frames for the save, whiffing three and walking none.
After a walk, Dylan Corl’s single and a hit batsman loaded the bases with Phils in the bottom of the first, Speigle cleared them with his two-bagger. Todd Rees and Colton Wrye followed with RBI-doubles.
Janocko, making his first start, kept Philipsburg at bay for two innings before surrendering two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. He struck out four, walked four and gave up nine hits in five innings.
The Phils added two runs on three hits off Andrew Redden in the sixth.
Nine of their hits went for extra bases, including pairs of doubles by Speigle and Rees. Speigle had four RBIs.
The Chiefs return to Jefferson County League action Wednesday at Brookville.
Clearfield’s home game against Punxsutawney scheduled for Thursday has been moved to Sunday, June 19, at 6 p.m. because the Punxsutawney Area High School team will be playing in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals after ousting Hampton 11-1 in five innings Monday.
