Lady Tide Drop Regular Season Finale to ECC 3-1

ST. MARYS – In their final regular season game, the Curwensville Area High School softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Elk County Catholic on Saturday.  The Lady Crusaders had beaten Curwensville earlier in the season by a score of 10-0, and this is one team that the Lady Tide will hope to see again as the District IX playoffs get under way on Monday.

“We played a very good game,” said Tide mentor Allen Leigey.  “We got beat by a bleeding single in the second inning by the number eight hitter in their lineup.  This game (softball) is like any other, the little things can make or break you.”

In that second inning, Lyndsey Trumbull slapped a one-out double to get things started.  After the second out put the runner at third, Michelle Imbrogno drew a walk and moved to second uncontested.  The real damage was then done by Jena Struble who found open space out of reach of the Tide defense that brought in two runs.

An error that would have ended the fifth inning aided ECC in pushing the score to 3-0.  Anna Hawkins’ single after the error posted the run.

The Lady Tide offense struggled to get things going on the day.  No Curwensville runner had been able to reach second base until Madi Peterson’s one-out double in the sixth (only one more Tide runner touched second in the contest).  Peterson scored one out later on a single by Molly Demchak.

“Madi had a nice double and flashed with her glove on two tough plays in the outfield,” Leigey said.  “Tierra Shope continues to pitch really well and deserved to win this game.  She was really mixing her pitches up and hitting the corners.”

Shope allowed only three players past second in the game – they, of course, all scored.  She walked two, struck out two and scattered five hits in the game.

Elk County’s Taylor Schlimm yielded four hits in the circle while striking out six and not walking a batter to earn her the victory.

Curwensville will enter the district playoffs with an 11-7 record overall.
