MARTINSBURG – An impressive pitching performance by Clearfield Area High School’s Tyler Jacobson went unrewarded Wednesday afternoon because the Bisons were handcuffed by Central’s Jared Baird.
The Scarlet Dragons escaped with a 3-1 Mountain League Allegheny Division victory that was in sharp contrast to the hitting spectacle the teams put on at the Bison Sports Complex last Friday when Central won 36-22.
Baird was near-perfect through six innings and wound up with a three-hitter.
The senior left-hander, a key in Central’s run to the PIAA Class AA finals last year, struck out 10 and walked none.
Jacobson countered with a two-hitter against one of the league’s strongest lineups. He had one strikeout and four walks.
“That’s the best game I’ve ever seen him pitch, high school, legion or teener,” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. “He kept them off balance and we were making some plays.”
The Bisons didn’t break through against Baird until Derek Danver doubled leading off the seventh inning and scored on Jacobson’s one-out single.
They had only two other baserunners, neither of whom saw second base.
Baird hit Christian Lezzer with one out in the fourth frame and lost his no-hitter when Drew Brown singled with two outs in the fifth.
Central’s first run was unearned.
Pat Schon landed at second on Clearfield’s only two miscues, moved up on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.
A successful double steal made it 2-0 the next inning.
In the fifth, Lucas Runk got the lone RBI with a sacrifice fly after Austin Cunningham doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
“We played pretty well. It was a good game,” Lansberry said.
Clearfield fell to 7-10 and 2-7 in the division, while Central improved to 13-4 and 7-2.
The Bisons go to Huntingdon Thursday.
Clearfield’s junior varsity recorded an 11-8 victory behind three hits by Nate Bumbarger, pairs of singles by Seth Ford and Jonas Kochan and a home run by winning pitcher Jordan Lancaster.
