Bisons Nip Golden Eagles 10-9 to Even Record

TYRONE – Down 5-1 after four innings, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team posted three runs in each of its last three at-bats and outlasted Tyrone 10-9 in Mountain League Allegheny Division action Monday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Jarrett Fulmer drove in three runs with two doubles and a single to pace a 12-hit attack as the Bisons avenged a 9-4 home-field loss to the Golden Eagles on April 11 and evened their record at 5-5.

Derek Danver and Christian Lezzer had two hits apiece while Andrew Redden added two RBIs.

Ian Murray’s two-run single in the third inning and Jordan Faretta’s three-run homer in the fourth provided Tyrone (3-9) with its advantage.

Clearfield, which took a temporary 1-0 lead on singles by Drew Brown and Fulmer around a sacrifice bunt by Coleman Kubala in the third, finally got to starter Matt Hample in the fifth.

Kubala led off with a double and scored on Fulmer’s third consecutive hit. After Danver extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double, Andrew Redden’s sacrifice fly and Trevor Flanagan’s RBI single closed the gap to 5-4.

The Bisons scored six unearned runs off reliever Kerry Cowher to make Fulmer a winner for the second time.

In the sixth, Lezzer singled and came around when Brown’s fly ball was misplayed. Danver and Redden singled across markers to make it 7-5.

Tyrone got one run back, but the Bisons countered with three more, thanks to a pair of Golden Eagle miscues and bases-loaded walks to Kubala and Fulmer.

Those proved all-important when coach Sid Lansberry pulled Fulmer because of a high pitch-count and Flanagan served up a three-run homer to John Kimberling.

Flanagan settled down to whiff the next two batters and, after giving up another hit, induced a game-ending groundout.

Both teams are 2-3 in the division.

Philipsburg-Osceola will be Clearfield’s next opponent for a home game Tuesday and a road trip Wednesday.

The Clearfield junior varsity bumped its record to 3-4 with an 18-5 win.

Winning pitcher Matt Kushner had two hits and scored three runs. Nate Bumbarger also scored three times.
