UNIVERSITY PARK – “Memories fading. Imagination Intact,” an exhibition featuring life-size ceramic figures by Jennifer Degges, a senior bachelor of fine arts candidate in ceramics, will be held May 2 to 7, in the Borland Gallery on the University Park campus.

Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be an opening night reception in the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 2.

A former student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Degges was introduced to ceramics when she transferred to Penn State.

“There is a directness to the clay that allows me to create whatever I want,” Degges said, “and gives me the time to figure out all the complications of building to produce my idea.”

Bringing together bisqued clay, cement, latex, and wood glue, Degges creates oddly familiar sculptures, including “Grandma,” “Dad” and “Pig.”

Degges said her longterm goal is to acquire a position as professional teacher of ceramic arts.

“Building a strong studio community is a crucial part of teaching and learning,” Degges said. “A support system is the backbone of being an artist and I have a keen willingness to assist those who need a helping hand.”

After graduation in May, Degges will enroll in the ceramics special student program at Virginia Commonwealth University to prepare for graduate school.
