Lady Bison Track Team Runs Win Streak to Five

Martinsburg – After opening the season with a trio of losses, the Clearfield Area High School girl’s track team ran their win streak to five with an 82-62 victory over Central on Monday afternoon.

The boy’s team, however, fell short in their bid to pick up their first victory when they were edged 80-64 and dropped to 0-8.

The momentum picked up by the win streak was not lost on head coach John Jacob, “The girl’s track team has been on a roll, winning their last five meets in a row.  Since their first victory against Tyrone, the attitude of the team has changed.  Everywhere on the track you can see a difference in how all  of the girls are performing.   One of the most exciting races on the track Monday was the girl’s 4×400 relay.  With the score being so close at the end, we knew it may come down to the final event.  The team of Courtney Smith, Carlee Freeburg, Kara Thorpe and Morgen Turner had their best race of the season.”

Coach Jacob didn’t only hand out praise to his relay team, but the distance runners also, ” The distance races are fast becoming one of the strong areas of our team.  Johanna Ryan has taken a strong leadership role.  While the younger distance girls are steadily improving to capture the second and third places we need to help us win.  Juliana Mellgard ran an impressive 3200 today out sprinting Central’s top runner to capture second and some much needed points near the end of the meet.”

Individual triple event winners for the Lady Bisons were Johanna Ryan, who swept the long distance races at 800m, 1600m, and 3200m; and Jessica Shomo who won the 100 meter dash, the long jump, and the triple jump.’

Despite the boy’s loss, coach Jacob saw some bright spots, “On the boy’s side the score was very close; but in the end we just couldn’t pull out the win.  We still have some little areas we need to improve and I hope we can pull together as a team to get a win.  The bright spot again was the boy’s 4×400 relay team of Beau Swales, Jack Mellgard, Dylan Graham and Rico Longoria.  The relay team had their most impressive victory and best time of the season.  In the sprints the boy’s are really gaining momentum when it counts.  Longoria, Mellgard, Swales, Graham and Ethan Thatick have been steadily improving and are starting to peak at just the right time.  At the same time, our throwers are becoming very consistent and are starting to compete against some of the stronger teams.  When we can’t pick up a win they are learning how to get the important second and third places to help out the team.”
