Golden Tide Shutout DuBois Central Catholic, 5-0, Behind LaBorde

DUBOIS – There isn’t a much better way to open a new baseball season than the way the Curwensville Golden Tide did on Tuesday in beating visiting DuBois Central Catholic (DCC), 5-0.

Senior Garrett LaBorde turned in a two-hit gem while striking out 12 Cardinals in the shutout win which found Tide head coach Denny Johns saying, “The performance by Garrett was certainly a real pleasant surprise. He was in complete control in some tough weather conditions with the temperature hanging around 40 degrees.”

The Tide would score all the runs it would need in the bottom half of the first inning as Shae Best took the first pitch up the middle for a lead off single.

Hunter McCracken then singled to left field putting runners on first and second. That was followed by a Shane Hoover double that scored Tide senior Best. Jesse Zorger would later ground out to shortstop allowing McCracken to run home for an early 2-0 lead.

Johns summed up the offensive day for his squad, “ We got off to a very quick start with the bats, which got us off and running. I was a little concerned we didn’t hit real well from the second through the fifth innings to open up a bigger lead.”

Curwensville did, however, add one run in the third frame as Hoover singled, stole second and then went to third base on a Cardinal error. Once again Zorger came through with an RBI as he grounded out to shortstop to score Hoover making it 3-0 Tide after three innings.

Two more runs would be added in the bottom of the sixth inning by Curwensville on a one out, two run single by sophomore catcher Kyle Bloom which scored Boone McGary and LaBorde, who earlier in the inning each picked up singles.

LaBorde, as mentioned earlier, gave up just two hits on the day, both singles, one in the third inning and the other in the sixth.

The contest between the Tide and Cardinals was originally scheduled to be played in DuBois, but due to field conditions the game was moved to Curwensville. The Tide will now play DCC in DuBois on April 20 at 4:15 pm.

Curwensville is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Brockway to play the Rovers. Game time is 4:15 pm.
