Clearfield’s Mellgard Receives National Football Foundation Award

State College — At Sunday’s Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame 14th Annual Awards Banquet held at the Penn Stater in St. College, Clearfield Area High School’s Jack Mellgard was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship contributed by M&T Bank.

At the beginning of the scholastic football season, the President of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter sent a letter and nomination form to each of the 45 high school head football coaches in the Centre region. Each school is asked to nominate one senior member from their football team to receive an award from the foundation. Each nomination form included a high school transcript and official (SAT/ACT) test scores. The Scholarship Selection Committee then used the following three criteria in selecting ten scholarship winners: Academic Achievement-40%, Athletic Achievement-40%, and Extracurricular/Community Service Participation-20%. The Scholarship Committee carefully evaluates  and then selects the ten winners. Jack became the fifth Clearfield Area High School student and first since 2006 to receive such an honor.

44 area high schools and 10 area universities were recognized. Notables in attendance were Kellie Goodman, Fran Ganter, Tim Curley, Steve Jones, Fran Fisher, and the keynote speaker was former Penn State All-American and 14 year NFL veteran Bobby Engram.
