HOUTZDALE – In a game that went back and forth until the final buzzer the Moshannon Valley High School girls basketball team defeated visiting Curwensville Wednesday night , 44-41.
The win by the Damsels avenges an earlier loss this season against the Lady Tide at Curwensville, 35-28, on December 20. Moshannon Valley improves to 3-19 on the season.
The Lady Tide, who trailed by three at the half, 16-13, managed to send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 29-29.
In the fourth period the lead changed hands several times before the Damsels were able to secure the home court victory as they outscored the Lady Tide 15-12.
Chelsea Neff of Moshannon Valley was deadly from behind the arc, hitting five three-pointers to end the night as the Damsels high scorer with 15. Claire Harlow had 10 while Maria Charney added nine to help out Neff.
For the Lady Tide, on their second straight night with a road trip, they were paced by senior Taylor Bumbarger with a game high 17 points, which included three treys. Savannah Strickland had nine points and Katie Wriglesworth chipped in with six.
Katrina Seaburn and Wriglesworth had big nights on the boards as Seaburn hauled in 14 rebounds and Wriglesworth 12.
After the game Tide head coach Rusty McCracken said, “It was senior night at Mo Valley and they did what they had to do to pick up the win. But we didn’t help ourselves. We just didn’t make the shots when we had a number of good looks at the basket most of the game.”
McCracken then added, “It was a pretty good high school game. Both teams had an opportunity to win this game.”
Moshannon Valley won the junior varsity tilt over Curwensville 51-19.
The Lady Tide, now 4-15, will entertain Kane on Friday night at Patton Hall. The junior varsity contest will start at 6 pm and the varsity game will immediately follow.
