CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville Area High School wrestlers Jake Keller and Austin Pollick registered major decision shutouts and seven teammates were recipients of forfeits in a 50-18 victory over shorthanded Keystone Thursday night in Patton Hall.
With only five bouts contested, the match lasted just 38 minutes.
Coach Duane Wriglesworth stated Keystone was a late addition to the Golden Tide schedule because the annual meet with Johnsonburg could not be arranged.
The original Clarion County team’s roster showed 14 candidates, but the 0-5 Panthers currently can fill only six weights and have had to call off two duals.
Curwensville matmen who had no opponents were Aaron Kline (103), Tyler Mays (112), Greg Koptchak (119), Alex Holt (125), Trey McKenzie (135), Nathan Wriglesworth (140) and Kyle Kyler (215).
Keller gained control of John Stiglitz 20 seconds into the 130-pound bout and worked his spiral ride for back points in each period en route to an 11-0 win, his 26th in 27 matches. The Golden Tide junior also had a reversal in the third period.
Pollick, a sophomore 152-pounter, earned his first on-the-mat victory in impressive 14-0 fashion, taking down Ricky Nelson twice and turning him four times.
“I was really happy for Pollick,” Wriglesworth said. “He looked good out there.”
Wriglesworth also was encouraged by Hunter McCracken’s effort against returning District 9 Class AA champion Tanner Hannold at 145.
Hannold, wrestling with an arm injury he suffered early in the 2010 football season, won 5-0 with two takedowns and an escape, but the Panther junior could not add any back points despite spending five minutes in the top position.
“Hunter was put into some situations he needs to work on, so it was a good experience for him,” Wriglesworth said.
Keystone picked up 15 points from 160 through 189 as Matt Hergenroeder headlocked Lewis Rhine for a fall at 1:21, Jordan Miller was awarded a forfeit and Brandon Chambers emerged from an action-packed bout with Chad Desmett with a 16-11 decision.
Chambers led throughout after getting a pair of early takedowns. He added three reversals and a two near falls.
Desmett nearly pinned the Panther early in the second period. He also had two reversals, two escapes and a two-point near fall.
Curwensville (7-10) concludes its dual meet season with three matches next week, Tuesday against Clearfield at 7 p.m. in the Clearfield Middle School gym in the makeup of Tuesday’s postponement, Thursday against Clarion in its home finale and Friday at Ridgway in the makeup of their Jan. 20 postponement.
The Golden Tide then faces a two-week layoff before the District 9 Class AA Tournament at Clarion University.
