MEN’S GYMNASTICS
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Penn State sophomore Scott Rosenthal of Clearfield won the still rings title with a 14.400 score at the 20th annual West Point Open individual competition Saturday night in Army’s Christl Arena.
On Friday night, he turned in a 15.200 performance for a second place in team competition as the No. 7-ranked Nittany Lions swept the rings and parallel bars events en route to a 348.400 and their third consecutive championship.
Penn State, which owns 14 West Point Open titles, has reigned in its last 13 appearances. The meet was not on the 2008 Nittany Lion schedule.
Temple (329.700) and Navy (319.600) were second and third, respectively, in the six-team field.
Junior Miguel Pinada (15.400), Rosenthal and sophomore Felix Aronovich (14.900) gave the Nittany Lions their highest rings total (60.400) since the 2008 team hit 62.00 at the National Collegiate Championships.
Two Nittany Lions, senior Matt Albrecht on the high bar and sophomore Mackenzie Dow on the parallel bars, joined Rosenthal as individual champions.
In addition to Pinada, Nittany Lions Albrecht, Dow, freshman Preston Gall (pommel horse), Francisco Vazquez (vault) and sophomore Parker Raque (all-around) were winners during the team competition.

WRESTLING
WILLIAMSPORT – Sophomore 174-pounder Jeff Thomas of Curwensville was 1-2 for Lycoming (9-8) in the 23rd annual Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by the Warriors in Lamade Gym Friday and Saturday.
Lycoming surprised No. 21-ranked Springfield (Mass.) 24-13 and then trimmed King’s 33-9 to advance to the quarterfinals before falling to Ohio Northern 31-10 and Oswego (N.Y.) State 19-17.
Thomas was edged 14-12 in a wild bout with Springfield’s Brandon Sundwall, won by forfeit in the King’s match and was pinned in 3:30 by Ohio Northern’s Kyle Kwait.
He’s 8-8, including 6-6 in dual meets.
The College of New Jersey defeated Ohio Northern 19-13 in the finals of the 20-team tourney.

LOCK HAVEN – Redshirt senior Derek Caldwell of Curwensville was a fall victim as Lock Haven (4-6) suffered a 33-6 defeat against No. 22-ranked Pitt in their Eastern League opener at Thomas Fieldhouse Friday night.
Panther Max Thomusseit ended the 184-pound bout at the 6:06 mark.
Caldwell is 1-4 in dual meets and 3-8 overall.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
BEAVER FALLS – Matt Shiner of Clearfield made his first collegiate start and scored six points for Westminster (3-13) in a 93-80 loss to host Geneva Saturday.
The sophomore guard played 12 minutes and hit both of his three-point attempts for the Titans, who have dropped five games in a row and their last 16 on the road.
Though Geneva has joined the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, the Golden Tornadoes’ games do not count in the standings because the school is an NCAA provisional member this year.
Shiner also hit a pair of three-pointers last Wednesday, when Westminster was handed a 77-64 PAC defeat by Thiel at Greenville. He wound up with eight points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals in 12 minutes.
In 12 games, Shiner sports 44 points, a 3.7 average, 17 rebounds, three assists and four steals.

GREENSBURG – Junior Todd Hryn of Clearfield no longer is on the Pitt-Greensburg team because of personal reasons.
He logged 61 minutes in 10 games, scoring 13 points and hauling in 20 rebounds.
The 6-5 forward also had two assists, four steals and one block.
Hryn saw action in 45 games during his three-year career and recorded 160 points, 126 rebounds, 10 assists and 15 steals.

MEN’S SWIMMING
LOS ANGELES, Cal. – John Bodle of Clearfield placed in two events and twin brother Chris placed in one race as once-beaten Westminster extended its winning streak to six by dunking host Occidental 156-91 and Lewis & Clark (Ore.) 145-104 at outdoors Taylor Pool Jan. 11.
John Bodle recorded a 1:01.22 in the 100-yard butterfly for a third against Lewis & Clark and a fourth against Occidental. He touched the wall in 1:09.26 in the 100 breaststroke for a third against Occidental and a fourth against Lewis & Clark.
Chris Bodle’s 2:00.19 in the 200 fly was good for third against Lewis & Clark and sixth against Occidental.
The Titans had spent a week training outdoors in San Diego and Los Angeles prior to the early afternoon tri-meet.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
CHICAGO, Ill. – Lincoln (Ill.) College freshman freestyle sprinter Brandie Centi of Clearfield helped two Lynx relay ‘B’ teams earn 32 points and also set personal marks in two individual events at the 2011 University of Chicago Invitational in the Myers-McLoraine Pool Friday and Saturday.
Centi turned in a 27.10 second leg for the 200 free quartet that placed 13th in 1:52.08 and a 1:01.27 anchor leg for the 400 free foursome that finished 14th in 4:05.40.
With 390 points, Lincoln claimed third place in the nine-team field.
Centi’s career-best times were 27.42 seconds in the 50 free for 22nd place and 1:01.47 in the 100 free for 28th place.
